Slow....
« on: October 31, 2010, 02:49:02 PM »
Two deer checked in Vail by 1:30PM today. Sad. Not seeing a lot of movement any more, need some more weather.

It's been slow all season. I've been hunting pretty hard, for six days, and I've only seen 3 legal bucks, 3 spikes, and a handful of does.

Sounds like it's as much due to a lack of deer as lack of weather.

If it's a lack of deer, where'd they all go? There was plenty last year.

Sounds like a lack of deer due to an over abundance of hunters killing everything with horns that move.  :chuckle:

We've started to see a lot more movement just this last week.   Seems like I'm seeing deer everywhere.

I tend to believe they do go more nocturnal when we've had pretty clear weather like over the last few days here. I did see fresh track, they are there somewhere. I'm optomistic and hoping it just means a better than average late season.

Why doesn't the state allow more does to be taken during the season?

Probably because they are trying to increase deer numbers, not decrease. Archery hunters are allowed to take does in many units and I'm sure they take more than enough.

We were hunting Vail Tree Farm every weekend it's been open. My dad missed on a 2x2 buck running 40+ through a clear cut opening weekend and a nice 3 or 4 point buck last saturday when he got out ot the truck and looked over the ridge to see if its a area to hunt. And today we were hunting an area we have been on every morning on the weekends and hunting very hard. Not Road Hunting!! Doing alot of glassing and were glassing this large steep hill and were like deer. We get closer and were like its dead. No one else around but we heard a gun shot this morning in this area and now we wish we were there. We go down to look at the deer and its a DOE!! Someone shot a Doe illegally and just left it. We took down the road and gave it to the gamewarden for they can investigate. It's so bad that people have to kill deer illegally. It's not that much for a good set of binos. Do the glassing find the deer and make sure there are HORNS!!

Ya I think it has to do with the weather myself. Things were looking good on Thursday when I saw 5 deer with 3 being bucks. One was a nice 3 point in the head lights about 1/2 hour before light. The 2nd was a 2 point and a doe, had him dead at 100 yards but let him walk. The 3rd was a nice buck chasing a doe in the repod. Saw them while riding the bike while my gun was on my back, just as I shouldered it and got him in the crosshairs he was gone. Friday 4 does , Sat 2 does, Sun 0. Each morning there were buck tracks in my boot tracks just no buck standing in the track. Definatly think it has to do with the clear calm nights. Oh well off to Arizona for a late elk hunt.
I hope when I die my wife doesn't sell my guns for what I told her I paid for them.

Weather does have an affect on the number of deer sightings but I still think there was a lot more blacktails in the woods 20 years ago.   :twocents:
