procrastination is a bear
« on: October 25, 2010, 01:46:38 PM »
So took my 15 year old boy up in the woods yesterday just scouting and small game hunting (I'm muzzle this year) and was walkingup an old overgrown logging side road when a big ole black bear walked out about 50 yds ahead. Holy sh I think I said loudly inside my head as it just stared us down. Told the boy to back up slow as i was wondering how much bird shot it would take if it charged :yike: As soon as she relized what we were she took off running full speed up the road along with two others that must have been her 2 year old or so cubs :dunno: cuz they weren"t little. Anyway put off getting my bear tag :bash: :IBCOOL: and will never do it again cuz I'm pretty sure there would be a bear hanging if I did. Just thought I'd share the story and a pic of what we were hunting in and it was cool. Off to get my tag now see ya

If they are with mama this time of year they are first year cubs. Please don't shoot mama. She still has some teachin to do. Bears breed every two years. They kick the cubs out at the second year when they are ready to breed again and that was back in May-June if these were 2nd year cubs.

I'm not a bear hunter, but that woulda sucked if he'd had a tag and dropped the hammer, and then the cubs walked out.... Not that he'd have been at fault (he didn't know they were there) but it woulda been a tough one on me.

Good story!

Yes, I passed on a bear several years ago while deer hunting with my muzzle loader. Black sow was working towards me, I was waiting, ready, and at 30 - 50 yards I noticed she had a cub trailing along about a hundred yards behind her. Had to think fast. Stood up, ready to shoot, and said "Hi Bear" in a real calm voice. She stopped, woofed, looked for a while and headed east fast - with the cub trying hard to keep up. It was pretty funny, and I'm glad I didn't shoot mama bear that day.
