Talk about misinformation, it is completely, totally illegal to keep road kill in Washington State. There's no gray area, it's in the State Code.

This was not "road kill." At least if the story posted was correct. The deer was hit by a car but not killed. He killed it with a rifle. So it's legal. He shot it and tagged it.

I would have done the same. Yes, even if I didn't have any orange.  :o

To each their own. If it was reported and police showed up, do you really think they would debate whether or not the deer was "dead", or "dying"? What about shooting next to a County maintained road? If the deer was healthy enough to travel well off the County Road, then it likely didn't require being put down. Some see big horns and don't question, just congratulate. Everyone's different in that respect.

I'm just going by the short story that was posted. I don't know how accurate it is, but it was said that the deer was hit by a car and then "walked up the hill and layed down." So it didn't sound to me like it was still within the county road right of way. If it wasn't hurt bad enough to require being "put down" so what? It's deer season, he had a tag, he killed it with a legal weapon and a legal area (as far as I know) and if it wasn't going to die from being hit by the car, it may have died of old age this winter. It's good a hunter was able to take the buck and it's good that the meat will be used.  :twocents:

I don't think the guy would have or should have gotten into any trouble for finishing off and tagging the buck.  He was lucky to find someone to lend him a rifle!  Most of us probably would have done the same thing in his shoes.   :twocents:

Heck, even if it wasn't deer season, it was at night, and it was within the maintained portion of the road, I wouldn't have a problem with it. The right thing to do is to end an animal's suffering ASAP.

I'd like to see the law changed and this is a good example of why it should be. Many States are changing road hit/ kill laws to allow tagging. I do agree they shouldn't suffer (if that is the case in any situation).

Though only a couple people know the real details, I would say that this is a classic case of using common sense.   Legal or not, I commend the guy for finishing off a deer and putting his tag on it.   I am not promoting illegal hunting activity because the laws are laws; but when they do away with all common sense, screw them and do what your gut tells you.  If your conscience is good with it, go for it.  If the gamie shows up and tickets you for such an offense, be prepared to pay the fine and still feel good about what you did.

I would agree with you for 1/2 of it. The other half, for those of us who have lost loved ones in car accident's/ hit and runs our first priority would have been to either make sure the victim as OK, or if it was a hit and run, report it so that a drunk doesn't hit and kill a person around the next corner.

He probably did make sure the person in the car was okay.  Why assume that he didn't?

The same reason you assume he did everything legally I guess.

Yeah, I guess I just believe the best in people.  No reason to assume the worst.

True story..... 3 years ago two buddies and I were driving to Coville from Spokane to our deer camp.  Just North of Deer Park we saw a doe on west side of the hwy about 50 yards out.  One buddy had a doe tag or we were muzzy cannot recall.  We went to the nearest shop and inquired on who the landowner was.  Landowner was across the street just over a hill.  When asking permission the landowner said he knows about that doe as he almost went to go shoot it himself.  He goes on to tell us it was hit by a car earlier that morning and has broken rear legs.  He ended up giving permission but interesting enough warned us that a female game warden has been continously driving by to see when someone is going to shoot that doe.  I took his point as to make sure we were adequately off the highway.  We went down and shot the doe.  Sure enough within 20 minutes here comes the female game warden.  Checked that it was properly tagged, asked if we had permission to be on the land, and thanked us for taking a injured animal that was suffering.  We also covered up the whole scene with my Suburban as to not offend anyone as we worked which she also acknowledged and thanked us for.
It's a TIKKA thing..., you may not understand.
