Muzzleloading??

Tired of the pumpkin patch...my buddy and I are both thinking about making the switch... pro's and con's??
I have never shot one so I know I should probably go and shot one before I jump right into things.
I have heard nothing but great things bout the CVA Elkhorn. Any suggestions would be great!

I think there are close to as many folks hunting muzzy season but are not seen as they are not wearing orange !!

I would say the pressure is considerably less and the GMU's change frequently enough that a guy paying attention can get in areas with even less pressure.  My thoughts anyway.

The muzzleloader elk seasons can be very crowded, just because of the fact that elk are only in certain areas, unlike deer, and not only that, but only a few GMU's are open for muzzleloader season. That's just one thing to be aware of. If you like the timing of the season and if there is a open GMU that you are familiar with or would like to learn, then go for it. But just expect to have lots of company.

The deer seasons however, are much less crowded, but the downside is the timing of the seasons, both early and late, are not ideal.

Pro's=More of a challenge, less pressure, more fun , sense of accomplishment getting game w/ something more primitive, hunter orange not required(but still wear orange stocking cap in the thick stuff because believe it or not there are idiots in muzzy too ), only one shot most of the time to seal the deal, sighting in with differnt charges and grains is a blast, big ole smoke cloud after shot , big .50cal or bigger .54 caliber projectiles, challenge in keeping your powder dry, closer encounters , CONS= not all GMU's are open and maybe 100 yd shots or more is unheard of, but I would probably put those under PROS too

Well if it weren't for those issues we wouldn't have the earlier seasons and in my opinion better seasons.  And that is why they call muzzle loaders a primitive weapon.  Chance you take.  I have had hang fires and yes it does suck.  But like I said a chance worth taking.

you will do just fine with the cva elkhorn. it is my go to gun. i also have a black diamond xr both 50 cals. there are both pros and cons for sure. but some of the cons are what add to the sport. such as one shot, limited range, open sights. all of which make it more challenging, but should not be considered a con. some of the real cons as there can be just as many muzzle hunter as modern hunters. there is limited deer gmu that are open. some of the unit's that are open are 90%+ private ground and the the open public ground gets a lot of pressure. pro to me are enjoying a spot that provides more of a challenge. late season hunt when more of the migratory deer show up in the area we hunt. a early and late hunt.

To clarify my opinion as I had Elk in mind.  Deer feels like more pressure and perhaps is so as the legal game is often broader and hunting deer with a muzzy has really caught on.  Elk I can firmly state is less pressure with muzzy due to the legal game is not usually (exceptions do exist) broader and the westside / eastside tags continue to weigh in.

Muzzle Loader  Season is Just as Bad as Modern Rifle. We have hunted it for over 10 Years, put in each year for a Bull Tag on the East side still no Draw. Look for Spikes each year and never see any.  Very Discouraging.    WDFW needs to Quit Killing all the Young Bulls and Let some of these Spikes Grow Up to be Big Dads, and let some people go after Grandpa!!

Talked with a fellow muzzle loader who had a bull Tag. It took him Fourteen Years to Draw.

Depends alot on where you are hunting and how much pre-season scouting you do.
