what area for moose

To build on what Grouse said, it's about 2 miles uphill all the way from the parking area to where you would start hunting.  The area has roads and trails all over the place which are perfect for accessing the area.  There is a place nearby in Idaho that rents quads,  so keep that in mind if you don't have your own.  You could probably do it on a mountain bike, but that instant that you walk up on a downed moose, you'll be relieved if you have the quad to haul it out with.  I rode 64 miles the first day on my moose hunt this year.  You really need to consider how large a moose is, and plan accordingly.  (1.5+ times the size of an elk).  Another consideration is the time of year you will hunt.  If you are going early,(Early Oct) it will likely be warm, and getting the meat out of the woods as quickly as possible is a must.

Mt spokane surely has moose, but I encounterd a youth hunter this year that spent 9 days there with no sucess.  Another adult cow hutner took 6 days to find a cow.  I took 6 days to nail a bull. If you get local help you have a leg up. 

49 degrees north and selkerk.  BUT if you do draw mt spokane let me know.  I am no moose expert, but I would me more than willing to go with you befor season to get you connected to the areas to concentrate on and a really cheap place to camp - free!.  Andif I have no other hunting conflicts invite me along and I will help you glass and load the meat.

guess I have to vote for Selkirk.  A little patience and some research of the unit and a guy should be able to get a nice bull.  Have to say I have seen a few nice bull out of 49DN.

deerthug-i  live in indiana and my grandparents live in washington. so i wouldnt be able to scout at all. thanks for the offer though.

 so i guess i will put in for 49 and mtspokane for both anterless and youth. i dont know know yet on the any elk cuz if i win its the only moose i would ever be able to shoot, so it would be nice to get a bull
i would probaly bring out my mossberg 500 with rifled barrel put a scope on it and based on the research i did with platinum tip slugs it would have enough energy to effectively kill moose out too 150 yards conservitely. Does that sound right?

Do you realize a moose tag will cost $1200 for a non-resident? Plus it will be $60 just to apply, with almost impossible odds of drawing.

2 miles and you need a quad ?
I can see for packing one out,... but to "get  to where I would start hunting" ... 
I hunt further way from my truck than that, with just my boots.

Moose is one of my dreams,
Strange coincidence, but One of my uncles  (dads brother) was a guide in Alberta for moose.
My fathers nickname was Moose, or Amoose, as his name was Amos.
Another Uncle, (married to my aunt) was also nicknamed Moose, by his teammates when he played hockey (Old timers might have heard of Albert Leroy "Moose" Marshall )
I have been called moose a few times also. as I am 6'4" and 280#.

Why wouldnt you just get a rifle? If you do infact get drawn your gonna be in the whole big time, might as well buy a rifle while your at it. Pick up a 30-06 and shoot 180 gr bullets (bonded or other tough bullet). Would be a lot better off with that than with a slug gun.

nonresident youth can buy a youth tag and why not use a 12 gauge the bullets expand to the sized of a gold ball and could break a mooses shoulder easily?

At this point I'd play the odds game.  Any of the units are good.  There are moose and big ones in all of them.  If you are unfamiliar with them then you have nothing to gain by any particular one.  All you need to do is get drawn.   I'd figure out the best odds and go from there.  Everyone picks Selkirk and 49 and they'll never draw.
