« on: November 04, 2010, 09:42:47 AM »
If I have a legal elk on my property in a no shooting zone during mod firearm season and my son has a mod firearm tag can he pull out the bow and harvest the animal?

 :yeah:

There are no such things as WDFW No Shooting Zones. Shooting areas/zones are made by counties, some counties allow you to shoot firearms while hunting, some don't, and some only allow certain firearms. You need to elaborate on what your "no shooting zone" is.

packwoodcoug probably just wants to know if it is legal to kill an elk with a bow if he has a modern firearm tag.  The answer to that question is YES.

:yeah:  each ordinance is different. some allow only shotguns with shot (clallam county for example) and only when hunting. sometimes there are exceptions based on the size of the property (greater than 10 acres for example). you've got to be VERY careful and a quick call to your county sheriff may be the quickest way to find out.

Yup. I know in my county each actual no shooting area is different from eachother.

In case packwoodcoug was interested in "no shooting zones".........

http://www.codepublishing.com/WA/LewisCounty/html/LewisCounty09/LewisCounty0910.html

The above link discusses "no shooting zones" in Lewis County.  It looks like archery is allowed, but I didn't read it that closely.

Thanks for the info guys.  Packwood is surrounded by a no shooting zone to protect the homeowners.  I know it is ok to hunt this area during archery season with a bow.  Local authorities agreed when I asked a few years back.  My question was more along the lines of using a legal bow during mod firearm and it sounds like the answer to that questions is yes.  My Mother in law lives on the property and has spotted a nice little raghron holding on the property... that would be perfect for my Sons first elk...looks like it will be tough for me to sleep the next few nights where is the fast forward button?

It's funny, you can use a bow to shoot an elk during modern firearm, but you can't use a muzzleloader.  That was the answer I was given last year by WDFW. I believe city ordinances will be the deciding factor whether you can shoot a bow or not.

Does no shooting generally include a bow?   I do know specific to my address in Spokane County I can draw and release a bow but cannot fire a gun.

Yes, you can use a muzzleloader during modern firearm season, provided you hold a modern firearm tag for that area. You can even use a scoped muzzy in mod. season.
