She weighed out at 170lbs. I hit her in the chest. Didn't look too bad till I skinned her and discovered a hole I could put my fist through. She dropped on the spot which made me happy. Hard to feel bad for a critter that puts you in a situation like that. I was hunting national forest in Chewelah about 45 miles north of Spokane. Would love a full body mount, but don't have the funds. Calling the taxi right now to decide what I'm gonna do with her.

Its just an old International tractor in the shop at my work. Needed to use the scale there to get a weight.

It should take a while to get a full mount done, which should help you pay for it.  That cat is big and would be a great looking mount, I've been hunting a long time like most of us and I have only killed one cat. I decided to mount the 5 year old male I shot and have never regretted it, and it cost 2000.  Nice job in saving lots of deer and elk, maybe yourself.

Nice job on the cat! I've only seen 3 in my life. 2 were out by the nile and the other was down the road from our house in Buckley. Don't know how many times I've had one track em when I'm out in the woods, heard a few scream at night though.
Back before St. Helens blew I was bivied on the Shoestring Glacier waiting for some light so we could do this climb I was wanting to do. We were dozing off when there was the hell of a loud scream that made your friggin' hair stand on end. Armed with ice axes and crampons we quickly put the crampons on and gripped our ice axes, day light could no come fast enough.

I'd sure like to see a cougar some day, and if the situation was right nail one.

The last week of the general season, when we got the snow. I was hunting east of Chewelah and saw the second largest cougar track I have ever seen. I was in national forest, any chance the same area?

The largest cougar track I ever saw, was about 1970 in the same area. A week after I saw that track, a 200 pound plus, cougar male was taken. That area produces some large cats. The average mature cougar female, only weights about 105 pounds.

What a beauty! (Double check the gender there, sometimes it's really hard to tell! 170 is a colossal female... it's a big male too, honestly!)

Excellent reaction, and well done!

Since it saw you, and it knew you saw it, and still wasn't hunkered down hiding, or slinking away, all bets were off. I'm not saying it would have rushed you, but it had gone beyond a stalk (for you and for the cat.) 100% unpredictable situation, and very dangerous. Something was going to happen. It was going to bolt, either for you or away. You did the right thing... and you tagged a GREAT trophy!

(Rugs are super nice too!  :P )

That is one great looking cat. I had something of a similar experience a few years ago. I had a very large male stalk me within 30' or less. I really was taken by suprise by it and could not believe it's size when it came towards me out of the brush. My cat weighed 210 pounds and it's picture is in the 2009 gallery of cats and such on this web site.

When these things happen, it makes me wonder, the news always reports how few deaths there are from cats and bears. I wonder if that is because hunters that have this happen just shot before the animal had a chance to attack.

I am glad that you came out on top in this situation! I rugged mine out by the way and am very happy with it.

Joe
