entiat buck down(pics added)
« on: November 06, 2010, 05:01:54 PM »
Hunting partner just called (wazzu99), he and his wife headed up to drive around and do one last scouting trip before him, myself and brother head up next week.  He couldn't wait any longer and apparently tagged a nice 4x4 with big deep forks.  *censored* still hasn't sent me a pic of it yet.

Here is a better picture of the buck.  Had no intentions of shooting anything this weekend.  Decided to head up to Wenatchee for the weekend with my wife and left the kid with grandma for the weekend.  Made it up to the area we wanted to SCOUT and started seeing deer immediately.  Mostly does with a few smaller bucks including a huge 2 point and another big 2x3 that were fun to watch.  Told my wife I wasn't going to shoot anything unless it was a nice 4 point with huge forks and decent width.

Drove up the road and glassed for awhile and didn't spot much so we headed back do to go to lunch when i spotted this guy way up a ridge with one doe.  I new he was a good buck so I let the wife have a look and she said there's your buck with big forks!  I knew I needed to get a closer look to make sure so we drove up the road a 1/2 mile and took off up the ridge to get above the buck.  As soon as we reached the ridgeline the fog rolled in and we couldn't see 50 yards.  We hung out for over an hour trying to slowly look into each draw w/o finding him.  So we headed back to the truck and just as we arrived the fog lifted.  I couldn't take it and had to walk back down the road to see if he was still there.  Sure enough he had only gone about 50 yards, infact we were in the same draw as him about 75 yards away and just couldn't see him in the fog.  So I put another stalk on him and the thermals changed and he blew out and over the ridge into another large canyon.  I reached the top and spotted him on the next ridge.  I found a huge downed pine tree and made a great 275 yard right through the boiler room and he dropped instantly and didn't move.

Final tally:  23" wide, 17" tall 4x4.  Could I have done better?  You bet, but it was a great experience with my wife that I won't soon forget.  She really seemed to enjoy the gutting as she teaches anatomy at the college.....

thanks guys.  Best part about it is I'm heading back up with Cascade and his brother to fill both of their tags, so I can still enjoy living in the wall tent for a week.  Now we can hold out for some of those huge beasts that come down once the snow flies.  Should be fun, sounds like a little weather may be hitting the high country this week.

Congrats on a quality animal. I'd be happy shooting one that big. Plus you had the wife along. That makes it even better.
