Does anybody still use them. I haven't read a post in quite some time with a good 'ol 30-06 doin the killin. Seems like its all the .300 mags 7mm mags and higher

I just think people with those mags need to brag them up and tell everyone how good they are to try and convince them. The 30-06, in comparison, is just old and boring. But people don't need to hype it up, doesn't need some super magnum name... everyone already knows it works and is probably the best overall round for US game. Its history and accomplishment speaks for itself.

Never had one though, came close twice to buying one. Ended up getting a 270 instead, both times.

Old school wood stock Remington model 700 BDL 30-06 all day long.

Backed up by a 30-378 Weatherby that is always available and tucked away nicely in the Suburban for that rare extra long pull.

Tony 270,

Everyone deserves at least one of each .30-06 and a .270!  Once the bases are covered and you don't mind the recoil, then step on up to a magnum.  In my case I have a .243, .30-06, 7mm Mag, and a .300 Win Mag ..... so I just need to ask Santa for a .270!   :IBCOOL:  Any other recommendations?

If I were to add another rifle to my 270 it would be big... like shooting a 300gr SMK big  ;)

Do think about an '06 from time to time, but just too close to the 270 to do it.

30-06 rocks ... cheap to shoot...   the caliber has been around since christ was born ... so alot of people have a good version of their handload .... although i still love my .300wm....

Go to 6mmbr.com, then search German Salazar. This guy shoots the 06 in competition out to 600 yards with open sights. Very accurate round. Can be loaded to match any hunting or shooting scenario you can imagine.
You don't need a flatter shooting rifle or a larger caliber. What you need is good field marksmanship. Jeff Cooper.

My grandpa's sporterized WW2 Enfield 30-06 is still my go to gun.  It's on the heavy side, but is a tack driver without fail.  I have a safe full of guns, but the Enfield 30-06 is the only one that comes out for hunting.

I shot a nice Montana mule deer buck last year with my 721 30-06 at an extended range. I bought an ADL stock and trigger guard for it and removed some material and glass bedded the action. The modern stock seemed a lot more conducive to scope use.

Like .22LR  I think it's one of the calibers every shooter should own at some point in their life.  It did after all win two World Wars.

I love my M70 stainless in 3006, but hardly use it since I bought a 7stw in 97 or 98.  I pulled it out of retirement in 2006, to take a whitetail, in honor of the cartridges 100 yrs.  I also feel I can shoot it almost as good as my 7stw out to 500 yds as well, but am more partial to the feeling of the remington in my hand then the Winchester, though I trust the winnie much more!  Next year though I'll probably carry the 3006 more, the wife can shoot it, and she wants a bear.  Might also use it on the muley's as well.

I have 2 30-06s. I bought the first one, a Remington 700 BDL, when I was 16--in 1963. It's getting a new barrel now, but I used to be able to get sub MOA groups with my handloads all the time. I still have the Weaver K4 scope I installed on it when I bought the rifle. Many happy memories with that rifle in the Entiat and Chelan areas. The other one is newer, a 4 year old CZ 550 American, and it usually groups within 3/4 MOA with my handloads. I've never really felt the need to have a magnum, because I can comfortably shoot the 30-06 as much as I want and not be bothered by recoil. Oh, I also have a Winchester 94 30-30 that I keep in camp in case a bear or coyote wanders by.

Been following this one. Gotta ask.....I've shot a 30-06 only for my entire hunting life. Blacktails, mulies and elk. Killed them all. But I've really started paying attention to what my bullet is doing or not doing on the last couple of elk. I shot my elk at an honest 25 yards this year as it was walking broadside from left to right along a game trail. Hit it tight behind front shoulder. With snow on the ground I trailed it by tracks, not blood. When I found it piled up some 100 yards later there were only two small drops of blood before it fell. My bullet did not pass through at that close range. In fact the last couple elk I've taken and both of my sons elk haven't either. These are boiler room shots at timber hunting distances. I use the same bullet now as I did when I started hunting many years ago. Remington core lok 180 gr pointed soft point.
Why will this round not pass through? We are finding the bullets just inside of the hides on the far side of the entrance shot. And they are in pretty good shape after expanding. They do major damage to the pump room for sure, but I would feel better if there was an exit hole for a better blood trail especially in difficult terrain. I'm not interested to start reloading my own ammo. I've read where some of the ammo manufacturers sell premium bullets. Would that help?
Can't we all just get along?
