7mm STW???
« on: November 09, 2010, 05:34:59 PM »
For any of you gun nuts out there, does anybody manufacture the 7mm STW or do you have to have one custom made?  And if you have one made, what do you need to start with?

Thanks.

I believe u can get a Remington Sendaro in a 7mm STW, or you can have one built I would recomend a remington 700 action to build off  :twocents:

It's an easy fix to make one out of a 7mm Rem Mag.  My Pops had one done for $65.00.

Remington offers the stw in the Sendero and I think thats it this year.
Most 7mm Rem mags have a 24" barrel.
The 7 stw needs a 26" at least, in a 24" you wont get much more velocity then a 7 rem mag.

For the extra amount you will pay for ammo, even if you reload and the marginal performance gain on big game, I would just stick with the 7 Rem mag.
You don't need a flatter shooting rifle or a larger caliber. What you need is good field marksmanship. Jeff Cooper.

28" with a muzzle brake is the ticket!

Good point about the barrel length.  I'm not much into reloading, but wouldn't there be a faster burning powder option if you did have one made with a 24" barrel?

The 7mm Ultra Mag is hotter than the STW.  I advocate the "more guns" approach, so I say get both!

I had a 24" barreled 7 rem mag rechambered to 7 stw. I tried a lot of powders but finaly figured I was spinning my wheels with the short barreled stw, all I realy got was more muzzel blast.

The 7 STW is pretty much a custom build now.  A guy can find used Sendero's now and then chambered in 7 STW or just get a 7 Mag and rechamber it.  If you were to build a custom, then I would definitely find a Remington 700 mag action (not one that was originally an ultra mag) and start from there.  In a 26" barrel, it will come very close to the 7 RUM in velocity.....like 50fps with way less powder.  In a custom barrel with a match reamer, very special things happen.  My builds with 27-28" barrels run 3300-3350fps with 168 bergers.

In my opinion a guy is better off woth a 7RUM. Basically same velocity, but there is no belt on the RUM, and you can make brass out of 300 or 338 RUM, which I think is easier to come by than 7 STW brass.

I shoot a 7mm RUM and shoot 150 Barnes TTSX at 3600 fps...  Sub MOA groups.  I bought mine in Sendero a year and a half ago.  Love the rifle...

338 RUM brass is shorter then 300RUM or 7mm RUM so you cant form 7mm from 338.
The belt on magnum brass is a non issue for a reloader, no advantage or disadvantage.
