Help with ID!
« on: November 11, 2010, 06:39:42 PM »
so I shot these Wigeon today and the middle bird I think is a Eurasian Wig... what do you guys think? I just see the redish color to the head and the wing patches are grey rather than green...

I would say no to the Eurasian Wigeon.  It probably has just been out in the bay longer than the other ones.  You will notice on the wigeon, pintail, snows they get that golden color to there white feathers from sitting in the bay.  You shot the brown bag today.

Jordano-
The heads of immature euros that I have shot were much more "rusty" colored than the middle bird.  While those immature birds were not as fully colored as the mature drake heads typically pictured they did stand out as "different" in a mix bag of widgeon.

Never the less an interesting colored bird.

Correct they are around.  Saw two yesterday, but didn't have a shot on either one.  You will know when you get one.

I don't think it is a drake... just wondering if it is a hen... the coloring is not that of an american wigeon....
