Went for a drive over to the Swakane/Entiat pics!!
« on: November 11, 2010, 06:57:13 PM »
Saw a 6 bucks total. was only there from about 11am until dark. Bucks are chasing does like crazy. We even herd them grunting while in pursuit of the does. Only got a few pics of the closer bucks. Saw one huge 4x4 in the swakane unit. I wish I had the rifle tag I would have had a biggen!!

Drew the archery Entiat tag a few years ago. Shot the smallest buck I saw over there. While scouting the last few days of the rifle permit, I saw the biggest living mule deer buck I have ever seen. Got him on video. Never saw him again. Could have shot him with a beer in my hand. Saw alot of nice bucks during the last part of the rifle days and the rut slowed down. Met a guy that his wife drew the tag with one point. The system is rigged! :yike:

I didnt see any monsters but one really nice 4x4. Didn't really see to many deer but it was really foggy. I ended up trying to stay below the fog line. I talked to one guy that had a Chiwawa permit for rifle and he saw 16 bucks today but he was holding out for a big one.

The buck and doe in the first pics came from way up on the hill. That doe didnt want anything to do with the 3x4. The doe ended up crossing the road in the the field on the other side. the buck chased her for ever then ended up chasing her across the river to the chiwawa unit.

I also ended up finding a dead 2x2. saw some crows flying around so me and my son went up the hill to take a look. It looks like it had been there since rifle season. all eaten up by the birds and coyotes.

Great pics huntergreg.  Looks like someone has a good hunting shack built by that 3 by 4.  Can't wait to get over there and get after it.  Good luck to everyone!

Pretty sure that these pictures aren't going to affect the already large numbers of hunters in the Swakane.  At least not by a large enough margin to matter.  The place isn't a well kept secret.  REALLY steep, lots of guys, roads will scare the living crap out of you when they are icy...all pretty well known.

Anyway, thanks for sharing the pictures!

I've been elk hunting it for awhile but never really tried for deer.  Do you think that there are many bucks there?

Elk in the Swakane/Entiat area???  Learned something new.  I've done quite a bit of hiking up there but have never seen Elk.  I see the entiat unit and slide ridge unit had 1 elk harvested a piece in 2007, none for 2009.  Entiat had 1 in 2008.  Swakane had 3 in 2008 and 2 2009.

Never see one elk in there and have been hunting it for 3-4 years. Never even seen an elk tracks.  :dunno:

Uh, yeah, sorry guys.  I was being facetious.   :chuckle:

I don't generally give away too much info about where I'm hunting/not hunting but, since I caused some confusion, I'll just say that I think that the Swakane would be a poor place to elk hunt.  But it might be alright for deer.   :P

Ok, laugh it up halflife, I grew up in the Leavenworth area, saw a big 5x5 bull up in Derby canyon during late archery back in the late 90's.  Also cut some fresh bull tracks in the snow up on Entiat ridge near Sugarloaf lookout last year during modern deer.  So yes, there are actually elk, just not many.  Much better deer numbers once the snow pushes them out of the Icicle and Lake Wenatchee areas.

Most likely not...there are "some" elk in the 250 unit....I know when I was really young, my family and some friends of our family would get into them now and then in the 250.....but tht was long ago when there was a late hunt......

There are some elk in there, but few and far between. Thats why you get an any elk season, and a week longer. Nice pics of the bucks though. Im taking a buddy in for the late bow hunt. The Swakane is big enough to find a few hidey holes!! BRING CHAINS

I actually have seen some pictures of some cows in the area - not saying that there are NO elk, just saying that it wouldn't be a good place to hunt elk.  If someone thinks that they can catch up to that bull you saw in the late '90's they should go right ahead.

Interesting that elk would be out by Sugarloaf.  Would be cool to see.

Definitely surprised me to see Elk tracks that far in but there was no mistaking them.  Sorry Halflife, wasn't meaning to lash out if it came across that way.

Halflife, no deer yet.  I did get my moose though.  Maybe those were the pictures you saw.  Hoping to see the 30" buck I saw last season but about 30 yards closer this time.

Ah, maybe last year?  Weren't there two nice local deer that you got?  Seems like I remember a picture but maybe it was someone else.

Congrats on the moose!  Where did you get it?  (I suppose I could just go find the thread - don't mean to hijack this one.)
