Help. Youth elk hunt/Montana
« on: November 12, 2010, 05:31:48 PM »
I was fortunate to draw a buck tag for Montana. I put in for a youth tag for my 13 year old son, and got it as well. The youth tag allows for general deer and general elk. I'll be heading to the Upper Missouri Breaks late next week. If we tag out early, we (my son) can hunt elk a couple days on our way back home. Most of the western GMU's allow either sex for youth hunters, some stipulations apply depending on unit. Having never hunted elk in MT. I'm hoping some of our fellow hunting bretherin can give us some suggestions and point us in the right direction. Anywhere between Lewistown and Missoula on public land?

Bitterroot south of missoula is not bad and also down by Wisdom is not bad depending on the wolves. U hunting Charles Russell for deer?

The little belts just out of lewistown usually have either sex the last few days of the season.

Vtec, C.R. refuge will be closed for mulies when were there, however it's still open for whitetails.

Buckhorn2, thanks for your input. We were heading to Forsyth 2 years ago for deer hunting, cruising along the freeway and seen a huge bull in the back of an open service truck. we snaped a few photos as we were heading down the freeway next to him. We pulled into a rest area and the guy pulled in shortly after, he shot his bull in the little belts.

I've heard the rut is starting to ramp up for the mulies back there. Weather forecast is 25 for the high, 10 for the low, next Sunday will be 30 high 12low with 60% chance of snow showers. BBRRRRR...

I'll add more antifreeze to the radiator, is there anything else I need to consider?

Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield
