Dead yote some where
« on: November 12, 2010, 10:24:21 AM »
So I ran out this am again and made a stand with no responce but on th way out a saw a yote sitting at the top of this hill just watching. So I stopped got my ar and mag opened the door and he was still just sitting there watching I ranged it at 300yds put my crops hairs on him and squizzed. I watched in my scoped as the 40gr vmax hit center mass and it fall and rolled all over the place. Then it got up and very slowly went over the hill top. Well i jumped in and turned my truck off and headed up the hill only to find no blood no nothing. I looked for a good half hour, I'm 100% sure I hit it but never found any blood:( this is the first yote these 40gr vmax haven't put down right there.

how many times have you hit them at 300 yards with the 40 grainers? brisket shot?

if he went to flopping around he's probably dead somewhere.  at 300 yds the bullet should have perfromed just fine.  It was probably not the perfect center mass shot, but he's probably dead or dying right now.

Those 40's work just fine out that far.  I killed 3 last weeked in John Day, OR with my 22-250 at about 300 yards.  Two dropped in there tracks and then third ran for about 50 yards and rolled up.  Can't wait for the calving season, then the bullets really start flying.

Quite a dif in a 223 and a 22-250 at 300 yrds with a 40 grainer .
I wont shoot anything less then a 50 grain bullet for coyotes .
  and i sure as heck
wont use
a V - max or a B- tip  unless its in a 25-06
Way to many runners with a 40,
  Give it time youll see.

Well I've shot a lot of yotes with these and have a dozen I've shot past 300. My long shot was a hair over 500yds and the bullet did it's job. I shot this one at 300 dead in the center of it's chest. So I figure that with a muz vel of 3800 out a 24" barrel and with a 16" barrel on my ar it was moving at 2200 so it should have worked just fine

:)Sorry I am with Jerry, as a matter of fact I quit Vmax altogether in my 223, I use 55 grain soft points, for me kill much better. In a 22-250  maybe but not me, I shoot 55's in it too but in it(22-250) VMax's work well. Over all the 22-250 is a much more efficent killer than the 223, that said my 243 with 80 grain  is my favorite it kills them right now!
I think your coyote is dead....... some where.

Not trying to be a smart a00 but what is allot of coyotes .
I am giving a educated opinion after 12 years of calling and harvesting hundreds of coyotes .  the 40 grain bullets will cause you allot of runners and that means valuable time spent tracking a wounded coyote .
waste of my time , i just want them to drop where they are shot , more efficient in my book and saves me more time for more stands .
I know what works after a few years on the stand and ill tell you the best bullet for coyotes in the 223  as far as knock down and little to no  fur damage is the 52 gr. speer hollow point its the number 1035 . load this with 26 grains of H 335 and you'll have a tack driving load that hammers coyotes.  no runners , more time for more coyote's simple math . Try it youll like it alot .
Carl your right if you want dead its hard to beat a 243  :yike:
As far as your claim on the 500 yrd coyote with a  223 40 grainer , yeah well i would have to see it to believe it .

Well you won't believE but in the last three years I lost count around 70 most where three years ago since the last year two years I've never had time. If you don't believe the shot well I don't need to prove anything cause I was there and I couldn't believe it either. I spend a lot of time shooting gongs at 300+ when I go shooting.

I am not disputing your shooting ability , And i comend you for your time spent @ the range ( wish more coyote callers would do this)
Just the effectiveness of a 40 gr. V Max at 500 yrds out of a 223 on a coyote size animal .
I have hit coyotes @ 500, 600 yrds with a 223 and i have never had one stay down for long at that range .
I my opinion the  consistant effective killing range of a 223 on a coyote size animal is 300 yrds.
just my :twocents:
If i cant call them in closer then 300 yrds i let them pass, and chalk it up to my lack of skill .

I have to go with Jerry on this one.  I was using V-max out of my Ruger Varmiter but was getting runners out at longer ranges.  I switched to a 52 grain HP match round.  The thicker jacketing controlled expansion and I was getting more "thump" at longer ranges as well as a scooch better accuracy at range.

I'm not sure why the v-max were not performing out at the longer ranges, I'm not that smart.  I do know that we loaded v-max up for the 22-250 and they were like shooting a dang frag grenade.  Was really mucking up the pelts.

( Look at its name  Velocity Maximum)
The V-Max bullet was designed for thin skinned animals ( like a prairie dog) and for explosive expantion
( red mist) .
it was a (marketing tool )to attract small game shooters .
the V-Max was never designed as a fur takers bullet as it expands to quickly and will cause train wreck type of expantion upon contact .
Now when ever you shoot any 22 caliber bullet much over the 3000 to 3200 FPS rate your going to get  a ugly expantion that will occur either outside ( entry) or exit side of said animal ( pass thru) .3000 FPS seems to be the magic number.
this is why i load my own and have done so for a number of years . its the only way to get the type of performance i desire = Knock down and lack of fur damage .
Ask a few fur takers and they will all tell you , slow them down if you want to preserve the pelt .
If you use the load i mentioned above you will get the best of both worlds .

I try to keep my shots short but sometimes the shots are there at longer ranges. I really want to get a WSSM upper so I dont have to think twice. I took my 243 out today and clean missed one at 158 yards :dunno:
