Last Chance Elk Hunt - Stay or Go??
« on: November 12, 2010, 01:20:12 PM »
Well I spent about 5 days over in the Clearwater with lots of fresh sign and found a well traveled spot, just no Elk sightings.  The torrential rain flooded out my camp, so headed home a day early to dry things out and went down to Winston for a couple days, no luck.  Now finished off the work week, and have a conditional kitchen pass to go back out for my last chance elk hunt, provided I'm back tomm night to take the wife out for dinner  :o

Here's the question:
Do I drive the 3.5 hours back to my spot tonight, hunt first light till noonish tomorrow, then drive back home 3.5 hours for the night out with wifey?  Or bag it and call it a learning season??

Keep in mind the Wife-O-Meter is in Orange bordering Red   :yike:  Hard to justify such a short time out in the field given the driving time and gas costs.  Three little ones at home pushing up the Wife-O-Meter doesn't help. I did advise her that if an elk is harvested date night is off as I'll be busting my hump getting that beast outta the woods solo.  I've more or less answered my own question, but feel free to chime in.   :bdid:

I say take the wife. Do some hunting but keep it light. Maybe you will score (on an elk).

I say hunt closer to home. If you get an elk down in the winston you will be late and the wife will be pissed.
If you plan to hunt untill noonish you are already planning to fail... By that i mean if you shoot an animal it better be by 9-10 or you will be getting home late and you will have a pissed off wife...

I think you should take your wife as well make it a fun trip do some hiking show here there is more to hunting than just killing an animal show her how beautiful gods creation really is you might find a new hunting partner in her.

I'd personaly try to go but maybe stay closer to home. If possible take wife but mine never wants to get out and hunt so u'd be road hunting. So again still up to you maybe just go close if u can and call it a learning adventure.
er as brad paisly says your gona miss her lol. :P

I'd take her and the kids with you.  Might be able to find some Chantrelles or something out there.  I take my wife every chance I get, that way if she doesn't really want to go out and beat the brush, I still can hunt my sidehills and all the way down to the bottom and there is my rig waiting for me!

You might as well stay home, what happens when you get one just after day light and it takes all day to get it home.
