Which model to get?? Hmmm
« on: November 13, 2010, 07:38:22 PM »
Well for my college graduation present my parents said they would buy me a new hunting rifle.  I've pretty much decided that I want a 270WSM for open country muley hunting.  The one thing I just can't decide on is which model.  I've narrowed it down to either the Tikka T3 or the Model 70 Ultimate Shadow.  Just looking to see which one you guys would get and why.  I know I'm probably splitting hairs between these two, but just curious what ya think.

If they are buying, get the Sako 85 Finlight in 270 WSM. :tung:
You don't need a flatter shooting rifle or a larger caliber. What you need is good field marksmanship. Jeff Cooper.

My son shoots the Tika.  Just change the recoil pad.  Put a Limbsaver on it.   Very nice rifle.

I enjoy my Remington 700xcr in 270wsm. Another one to look at is the Remington 700 SPS stainless in 270wsm.
Nothing like a Remington model 700xcr.

Both are fine choices. I would lean a little more to the tikka because of the weight. add a better recoil pad like said and it will make you a fantastic gun. 270wsm is one of the best cartridges out there and one of flattest shooting as well. wide choice of bullets as well.

Thats exactly why I decided on this gun, I only hunt the East of this state, as well as Wyoming so I usually find myself stalking around in the open sage, the velocities this caliber can produce along with the bullet options is what really attracted me to it.  I may have added a third option to the mix, I've read a lot of good things about the Browning X bolt.

Yeah, that.  I have the Tikka T3 .300 WSM and put the Limbsaver on it.  The problem really wasn't the felt recoil but I thought the barrel jump was the issue.

Anyway, with a Limbsaver on it, it was fine.  I also put a muzzle brake on it but it probably wasn't necessary (but it's really nice to shoot, now, except for the noise.)

Not sure about the pricing on the Browning A-bolt, but my dad has one in .270 WSM and it's a good shooter.  That one kicked pretty hard, though, until he put a brake on it.

Darn, I thought we were talking about a different kind of model...  :dunno: :dunno:   :chuckle: :chuckle:
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.
