swinging selkirk moose sides
« on: November 14, 2010, 08:28:40 AM »
The beginning of the end of my moose hunt began on the evening 11/02 when I glassed a big bull elk across mill creek from the 1920 rd,but with not enough daylight left to stalk him so I drove down to the gate on the 400 spur off the 250 rd in mill creek and slept there. In the morning I went up the400 spur and when I glassed the bitterbrush hillside below the 306 rd I saw the elk feeding about 300 yards from where he was the nite before,Also saw a 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 year old bull moose feeding to the south of the elk. With the north wind that day I decided to go up to the 306 rd by the pelke warming hut and work down to the elk as he had fed into some old growth timber between mill creek and nola creek and hope he would have bedded down in or close to the timber.I went down thru the bitterbrush below the 306 rd about 250 yards went I jumped this moose out of some populars,He ran out and stopped. He was tall on his left side and I quickly decided to take him. With tall bitterbrush the shot from my 3006 hit him high and broke his back anchoring him rite there,Which was a good thing.I got him gutted and on the way back down to my truck I hunted for the elk but didn't find him in the old growth,Would have been nice, but I got what I came for.I called my friend Mark wells and my two sons,by 6:00 am they were there with enough rigging to drag the moose up whole.8:00 pm I was home and in the morning I took the quarters to stewarts meats,he weighed 543# and had a 46.5 spread. Thanks to everyone on this site.

awesome! congrats to you. pretty cool that you were able to get him out whole like that. while up goofing off in the early snow we had I ran into a woodcutter who told me he saw a big bull right by the warming hut.
