Nice buck! Has anyone here bagged a whidbey deer? I hear they are smaller than the common blacktails, but how much do they typically weigh? That one looks pretty big.

Patton.. program them to only feed in the day... start only putting cob or apples out in the mornings.. just enough for the day... they will get programmed to come there for the food when it is there..

Buckslaya.. I have been hunting Whidbey for 30 years... yep we have small deer.... for the most part.  However,  we also have lots of deer.  I am very picky for most of the season only taking big ones.  My 2nd doe last year (drew 2nd deer tag) hanging from my shop rafters and her head was still on the floor.  SHe easily weighed 150.  Most of the does weigh about 100 lbs.  I took a nice buck a few years back, 4x4 with eye uards, and I know he easily weighed over 150.  I drew the extra tag again this year,  and have filled 1 during early season,  that doe easily weighed 140... She was standing next to 2 other does, and she was a good 8-12 inches taller at the shoulders.  THere have been some toads of bucks killed over the past few years.  THe bad thing about WHidbey is most of it is private and way too many tree huggers.  Put in some effort during the spring and summer and you can get a spot to hunt.  The Island is pretty thick stuff... so plan on spending some weekends cutting trails and shooting lanes... Lots of effort that fills the freezer.

NWBOWHNTR- thanks for the explanation. I used to live on the Island as a young buck and actually did hunt deer there a little bit (mostly ducks). I shot at some does there once with double 00 buckshot, but probably didn't come near them (I was like 14-15) and have always been curious about their size.
