Less Pelt Damage?

I shoot Hornady 40 grain v-max out of my Remington .22-250, but they leave a decent hole on the back side.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to what bullets don't do as much damage to the pelts, but still perform well?  I have used my buddies .223 with fmj's and they work well, but finding fmj in a .22-250 is touch to come buy.  Actually I haven't found then yet.  What works for you guys?

well dont have you caliber,but all I ever used when fur was good was a 30-06 with 125 corelokts,But I only head shot.. :dunno:

Where are you shooting them?  When pelts were worth something I learned to shoot them on the shoulder not behind and wouldn't have an exit.

Go with a standard soft point, 50 or 55. I personaly like the cheap Hornadys.

I switched from Vmax to Hornady soft point 55 grain. vmax in my 22-250 even the 55 grain vmax tore the heck out of the pelts.

I try to shoot them in the shoulder, but running dogs are a bit tough.  I'm not trying to make any money on the pelts, I just like to have them.  I got hooked up with 10,000 acres near John Day, OR to hunt and the owner says that if I don't shoot a dog or cat when I see them he's going to be pissed at me.  He runs a cattle ranch and hates dogs and cats.  I'll try the cheaper Hornady's and see how they work.  Thanks

I shoot the Winchester varmint packs with the 45 gr JHP in my 22-250's. Very rarely an exit hole and massive internal damage. :twocents:

Read Jerry malbeck's recent posts regarding the 52 gr. Speer flying about 3000 fps. I agree with him that this velocity is optimal for minimal pelt damage. I achieve the same effect in my 22-250 with 30 gr. of H4895 and the 55 gr. Hornady SP SX (super expanding). These clock at 3070 fps out of my Remington 788. They go in and don't come out.

You give up some range, of course, especially with the 22-250 but that's the trade-off you make for minimal pelt damage.

Another nice thing about some of those fast bullets is that you have less worries of downfield accidents.  (not saying you shouldn't still be safe or diligent) just more piece of mind.  When that bullet makes contact with something. POOF, its done.
