Late WT tag success #1
« on: November 17, 2010, 02:42:01 PM »
Well, while most everyone was out chasing the big bruzer MD bucks we drew the WT buck tags and that was quite a different story. We saw dozens of nice big mulies and they were rutting pretty good. The whitetails were very scarce however. On the afternoon of the 9th we were eating lunch and watching a field bordered by some thickets. A squal came in just as we spotted a couple of does feeding out into the field. As we worked down to get a better look we found they had picked up a nice buck! We made a plan to work behind a hill and pop over the top and get 'em. Well the best laid plans,,,we get over the top and nothing was there. Busted! So we sat down behind a sage clump to see if anything else would come out. My hunting buddy had graciously allowed me first shot on the first buck this season as I had never taken a good Whitetail before. We spotted a few deer back behind the thickets and were watching them. I glanced back over to the field and low and behold as many of you know the ground had just popped out a deer! I whispered to my buddy "Deer in the field", he grabbed his range finder as I was watching it through the bino's. Just as I was telling him "Buck!" he was telling me "320 yards". There was a fast and furious moving of rifles onto shooting sticks and the like. I remember telling myself "Aim small miss small" I am not a new hunter but man did I feel like it. It seemed like an eternity but probably was only a few seconds later I was able to pull the trigger on my 270. The deer jumped as I heard the tell tale thump of a bullet striking its mark. He lunged for the fence and tried to go over. He caught his feet and I saw all 4 feet in the air. We watched and he was down. By this time the squall turned into a snow storm and we walked down to the deer in the snow fall. He didnt shrink as we got to him and is my best deer yet! Thanks to Kevin for the first shot op.
