"The Can"
« on: November 17, 2010, 09:10:29 PM »
Has anybody tried the "can" from Primos. I was unable to get a buck to stop for a shot last year during the late muzzy season, and I'm looking for ideas.

If they have any idea you are there it won't work.

I've used the little brown flat call (can't remember what it's called) and had it worked.  Buck was really rutty and was looking for a doe.

If you're trying to get them to look back at you to give you enough time for a shot, you can try whistling, making a loud noise, etc.  Hardly ever works (but might be worth a try if you've already blown it - but don't do it if you think other deer are around) or they stop way out there - which might be ok for a rifle but doesn't help a muzzy or archery hunter.

I use the can for whitetails, but I also found that shooting them will usually stop them too :chuckle:
WDWF needs to get a clue before it's to late!!!

I used to use the can back east to call them in but not to stop them. This past general season I used a cow elk call with good success getting a few does to stop at about 250 yards. It worked multiple times. That or you can grunt them. Usually I carry a grunt tube but you don't need a tube....just do it with your voice.

I have called in bucks and does with the can or bleat & heat type calls, but to get them to stop I usually bleat or grunt with my mouth.

Haven't had any luck with it yet. Always flipped it like the instructions said till I figured out how much you can do by blowing thru it... :dunno:

The buck was moving through the timber, so I would have needed him to stop and hopefully come back my way. I've whistled, and grunted with my voice to get'em to stop for a shot, but I would like something to get the buck to hopefully come my direction.

I have called two bucks in with the can both were in late buck. One small spike and one nice buck. On another note we were about 8 miles behind a locked gate the deer there don't get to much pressure. At least not by idiots, the People that are willing to go that far usually know what they are doing.
Remember that buck is climbing that Mt. every day!

Tried to whistle to stop a monster whitey at 60 yards in Iowa last year but at zero degrees and the excitement no noise came out.  My son gave a grunt to stop it which did the trick.
