Transferring ownership of a weapon

I'm buying some guns from a buddy and he asked that I "register" them so they are no longer in his name.  How do I do that?  Is it state specific or federal?

This is what my local sheriff's dept told me. With long guns (rifle, Shotgun) etc there is no legal form to fill out that transfers ownership. The best thing to do is a bill of sale. For handguns on the other hand you can pick up a form which both of you fill out and that transfers ownership. However I think you can go to an FFL and do it that way. A bill of sale has always worked for me.

If they're long guns I doubt that there are any records showing that he owns them. Handguns, maybe the city he lives in might have record of it. But I don't know for sure.

its not required for any firearm in Washington state on a private gun sale. period.

Just write up a bill of sale with your buddy noting all serial numbers and keep a copy for yourself in your safe, thats all anyone needs to transfer a firearm in Washington.

Guns, pistols or long guns, are not registered in Washington State.  Use a bill of sale to transfer ownership.  If you use an FFL, expect up to a 10% charge.

Unless it is a machine gun where a special tax and transfer take place by federal law & licenses.

Hand guns are regersted to original owner,and a bakkround check is done,having sold guns i have had police knock on my door years later,but this is only for pistols,they are on a federal register

If you give him a signed bill of sale with the guns serial number on it, that should be enough CYA for him if it ever winds up at a crime scene years down the road.

Exactly, its just a way that both the seller/buyer can aire on the side of caution and make sure the transaction is solid, in writing, and notorized if necessary. It's a good practice if you're selling to/buying from someone you don't know very well. Its how I sell/buy all my guns locally

As the form CP posted says in big bold letters at the very top, "...VOLUNTARY".  Although registration is not required in this state for private sales, if that gun was originally bought at a store, then it was registered to that buyer at the time of the sale.  And if that buyer wants to make darn sure, that he doesn't get woke in the middle of the night by LEO's that think he still owns the gun, then that buyer/now seller, would be smart to use the form CP posted, and make sure that gun gets out of his name...

Take copies of his and your license and CCLs and write a bill of sale.
As long as he has that he's good.
