pics of my Malaga Bull
« on: November 18, 2010, 08:32:18 PM »
thought id share these pics of my Malaga Bull from 2004. was drawn for malaga tag that opend up january 1 2004. basically it was a damage control hunt on cherry and apple orchards just out of wenatchee. the bulls came outta the hills to the orchards and sure pissed off the orchard owners. i shot this bull 100yds off of squilchuck rd on private property. i workd all the orchard owners pretty hard to get access and only a few would grant me access( lots of orchard owners like to watch the elk ans wouldnt let me hunt unless the bulls ripped up their trees). luckily i met a guy who had a malaga cow tag and we spotted a herd of cows and he went and shot one and one day while driving threw an orchard area he spotted this bull bedded in a cherry orchard 100yds off the road. the snow was waist deep and chest deep in the ditch i crossed as u can see in the one pic of me with snow in my binos. ended up getting this bull after shooting over the back of a 350"+ bull on another piece of property. all in all had a great time it was my 1st elk and certainly not my last(its tuff going from this to "true spikes") I shot him with my 300 win mag

yeah it was VERY difficult for my dad who got drawn the year before except he got drawn for the november tag. i shot this bull 200yds from where my dad shot his bull the year b4. his was a big 6x6 that scored 330. if it wasnt for our taxidermist out of malaga who knew all the land owners neither of us would have been successful at all. definatly a special thanks to wildlife creations taxidermy out of malaga. a few of the land owners were big time hunters and didnt like "coasties" comming over to the area and harvesting the bigg bulls. we ran into one guy who was out everynight with his dogs and shot gun running the elk onto his property so we could shoot them. what a jerk

HELL YEAH Rolly is the MAN! we call him up every elk season to find out where the elk are at. he know ALOT. do u know one of his buddys named Gar? he owns a big chunk of orchards by the jump off on the wentachee side. i hunted Gar's property most of the time thats where i missed the big 6x6 and took a texas heart shot and missed at a huge 5x5.

Yeah farmers are ridicoulous. They complain and piss and moan about elk damage but wont let anyone hunt their property. They expect government hand outs and reparation money. Here's a novel idea if the damage is that bad BUILD A FENCE!!!

MY uncle is a farmer on the west side. He asks for damage control permits. He also lets people hunt on his property. And guess what HE BUILT A FENCE!!!

yep, Rolly is a good guy and does good work. Garland is also a good guy, his property is across the road from my uncles orchard. Very elky chunk of land. Whos orchard did you kill that bull in on the squilchuck? My families ranch is about a 1/2 mile below the state park. Congrats on a nice bull! Wish I could kill one, I just get to watch them every winter. :'(

I shot my bull on Mr. Hampton's property. an orchard owner last named Zimmerman granted me access on his property and had 2 huge bulls a 7x7 and 6x6 on his property but after hearing that i missed that big 6x6 he wouldnt let me shoot either of the 2 bulls and he let 2 tag holders a father and his son go shoot them. i was bummed got to watch them both walk up on the bulls and kill them both simultaneously. oh well the father and son were both from wenatchee and the property owner felt bad that a coastie(me) was gonna get to shoot them and not a local. it was funny i was in class at school and my dad called me up and yanked me out of school and told me that there were 2 huge bulls on property i had access to so i camo'd up left kent and before we got to ellensburg we got a call from Rolly sayin that the guy wouldnt let me shoot the bulls we still went anyways tho.

What pisses me off the most and alot of "Master Hunters" agree with me is; in the Kittitas Valley you have hay farmers that live up against elk country. They complain about elk damage to their crops. But they lease their property out to cattle. So how does an elk damage your hay field but cattle don't? Then the WDFW solution to the problem is the MH program. Which is a bandaid. They let fully capable grown men shoot elk in a Hayfield. WHY???? Instead they could let disabled hunters and kids harvest those elk. Let the ones who can't chase elk in the mountains anymore do it. And then there's the money that the WDWF pays out. What a bunch of cowards. Either tell the farmers to pound sand and the only way to get damage money is IF they have a fence. Or stop paying reparations, save that money and build a fence. I mean in the Kittitas Valley alone they pay 10s of thousands odlf dollars in damages.

I didn't mean to rant but the original poster said they couldn't get permission in many spots.  THIS IS PURE BS!!! If a farmer receives one penny for damages then they should HAVE to ALLOW ANYBODY to hunt their property. The same exact thing happens in the Teanaway. The farmers are surrounded by elk country. They piss and moan to the WDFW. They get money from the WDFW and also the special seasons are late to help keep the elk out of the farmers fields. But the farmers wont let anyone hunt there. So the hunters hunt off the property pressuring the elk TO the farmers property causing more damage. Its a cycle caused by stupidity and greed.

*NOTE* My statesments above to not apply to all farmers.  I have nothing against farmers.  They feed our nation.  BUT...  the statements above DOES apply to alot of farmers and only applies to the ones that are described in the above post. So please dont think I'm painting all farmers in this manner.

clock, I am one of those MH's that can hunt that area, but I have issues with shooting anything in a field. my crew tends to hunt the canyons and arroys or the tanny. I 100% agree that anyone recieving crop damage $$ should have some access program, and I am working as hard as I can to get it there.....although my work is more biased tothe hunting with permission land.

there is not a soul who can't become a master hunter and I know of a 11 YO girl who may well become one by next year. the program weeded out most of the trash in the last couple years and now if you are a previously sighted hunter you are banned from the program, and should be. I respect the land owners rights to be able to regulate the nomber and specifics of who hunts their land but if they are forced to let everyone on how will they hold accountability? at least if a MH come on their land they are supposed to be ethical hunters in good practice....not all are, but should be....and if they go slob they are pluckedfrom the program forever.

the mh program is a bs program, but it is open to all hunters who are willing to participate and follow rules and it does make for some long seasons and good ones to take the kids on.

I'm not completely against the MH program.  Most people in it are good people who just want to hunt longer and more often.  My uncle is one.  I'm just saying how it is being used in the Kittitas Valley is not stopping or helping the problem.  It is a temporary band-aid that works for a couple of days at most.  I am still firm on my belief that if property owners are having problem with wildlife and need a few animals harvested then the crack should be given to disabled and when I say disabled I mean in a wheel chair disabled not 350lbs I eat too much disabled, or a kid.  And when I say a kid I mean 12 years old not 17.5.

MH's can still hunt the low spots like where you are talking about where you go but let the kids and disabled have a crack at the ones in the fields.  And as far as the Teannaway goes that is complete BS.  The WDFW created a special season aimed SPECIFICALLY at helping out the elk damage because of farmers complaints.  Yet these same farmers wont let ANYONE hunt their property.

As far as access goes you're right not EVERYONE should be allowed.  But they should have to prove that they let X-number of people on.  Unfortunately no-one in the WDFW apparantly has a spine to do what is right.  But then again we ALL know that the WDFW doesn't care about wildlife.  They care about $$$$$$$.

Thankyou for your efforts high country.  THat program needs more like you.

haha. Yes it is a small world. I thought those bulls looked familliar! Gregg Hampton's property borders ours, (Pearson). There was alot of nice bulls and a few monsters that wintered between Hampton's and our place back then. The WDFW took care of that though. Too many tags for that area and as a result most of the bulls are gone. Don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming the tag holders at all. Heck I would have loved to shoot one of those big guys! Where did your dad shoot that 2003 bull? Was that on hampton's too?

i was wrong about where my dad shot his i thought it was by hampton's. He took his bull on Zimmerman's property where the 2 monster bulls were taken durring my hunt. but yeah very thankful for Gregg Hampton and every1 who let me have the opportunity to hunt their land. only had issues with 1 person who let us have permission cuz his brother was out almost everyday durring my dad's hunt to chase away the elk onto his property.....oh well tho i was fortunate enough to get the bull i got thanks to a great bunch of guys and a great bunch of land owners

Is it not true? I do not believe he was throwing turds at anyone but wdfw and a few greedy or anti hunting (or both)farmers. You saw what I posted about Stemilt basin orchardists and I stand behind it.
C E and I don't agree on a few issues but on MOST we are together.  I don't think any of it was pointed at you or your elk. Nice animal by the way. I'm with your Dad,over 40 years also.  I kick myself in the ass for not buying property up there 30 years ago!!

Gregg wasn't throwing turds. I was responding to your story talking about how some people wouldn't let you hunt their property even though that is what that hunt was designed for. It was a statement of fact illustrating how it was jacked up they wouldn't let you hunt.  It wasn't meant to be negative it was a statement of fact.

mybad colockumelk i obviously took what u said the wrong way and u are correct it is BS. farm owners who have any damage issues should be more than willing to let a tag holder harvest game on their property but unfortunately there are farm owners out there that are unwilling to. they have the opportunity to control the damage but dont want hunters to harvest the damagers. oooh well tho sooner or later they will figure it out
