Teanaway Unit question?????
« on: April 08, 2008, 05:13:58 PM »
I have heard that the Teanaway unit has a lot of locked gates in it with clear cuts behind these gates is this true?

Thanks ahead of time.

Yea but most of the elk are down low on the private property

Yep my family and my wife's family are from there and it still pretty hard to get permission to hunt some of the places for anything, deer elk, turkey, bear. Just knock on some doors and ask I guess  :dunno:

I don't care about hunting elk or hunting private land.  Just wondering if there are a lot of locked gates with clearcuts behind them.  I am thinking about trying to do some mule dear hunting in this unit.

There are some gated roads but much of the Teanaway is roadless. You might be better off checking out some of the hiking trails. In most cases plan on at least a 3 mile uphill hike to get into the deer and away from most of the people. This year may not be the year to go due to the high numbers of deer that didn't make it through the winter.  It would make for a nice camping/scouting trip though for future hunts, if the deer ever recover.

I know that area very well and yes, a lot of roads are gated now.  I think the Middle fork is the best option and has the fewest gates, but dont quote me on that.

Also know this area very well and yes you are correct.  There are several gates down low and yes there are Clear cuts behind them.  There is also great deal of private and Corp timber property on the south and east sides of the unit but still plenty of public hunting access.  Lots of pretty country not many critters anymore.

What I am looking for are gates to walk behind.  But should I look more at hiking trails?  Are there a lot of trails in this unit?

Thanks

Yeah there are lots of trails but dont expect to really hunt off them you'll have to get off the beaten path eventually.

That's the truth Cougeyes, on the trails you will run into LOTS of hikers, even during hunting seasons. You will have to get back aways to really enjoy some privacy while hunting, that is not having a stalk ruined buy a hiker asking "Did you see anything?"  This will also get you away from the majority of other hunters there at that time. There are some Whopper Bucks in the area, but you have to really do some work to get up to them. My in-laws have a camp they pack horses into every year, but they have taken some real big bucks out. Hope this helps.
