Want to Tan an Elk skin
« on: November 20, 2010, 09:16:44 AM »
I picked up a small Spike Elk in NM last week and I'd like to have the hide tanned.  I don't really want a rug made, just a nice soft piece of leather (hair on).

Any recommendations for someone who can do that for me?  I don't want to drive a long way to drop it if that can Be avoided, so someone in a triangle between Tacoma, North Bend and Burlington would be nice.

It was about 15 degrees outside when it was shot so after skinning I laid it out flat to freeze it, and then folded it up and it is sitting in the freezer at home at this time (no salt on it). It is in pretty good shape with a couple minor cuts in it from the skinning process (2-3 all under an inch).

Hey Rob,

I can do a soft tan hair on for you with your Elk hide.

Pretty much any taxidermist can do a soft tan on that elk hide for you.  BUT...every taxidermist has there version of what a "soft" tan should be (thickness and pliability).  It also depends on the tannery they use.  Look at a couple of there soft tans befor dropping it off.  :)

Most of the time the neck areas are going to be a little thicker and not quite as soft/pliable as the rest of the hide.  That is the same with pretty much any animal.
