First muzzleloader deer

This is a downer.   My cousin, 400out, took me out deer hungting yesterday.  I took a shot at three pointer, we both heard the THWOP.  He walked up the hill slowly, looked like he was gonna bed down.  When we made it to the top of the hill, he was on a dead run jumping over a fence, crossing a road, and jumping another fence.   He then went down a deep draw.  We checked the road where he crossed and could not see any blood.  We looked around and tried to track him but couldn't find any sign. This was all about 3:30 4:00.  We went back today and drove the road that he crossed.  Today I had Transka tag along.  When we got to the spot he crossed, we got out of the truck and glassed towards the bottom of the draw.  We could see crows flying around and two coyotes took off.  Bad feeling.  We went down the hill to see what they were on, and there was a deer carcass.    Nothing but bones and fur.  Glad I found it, but pissed that I did not get to bring any meat home.  Coyotes were aparently slightly hungry last night.  So I tagged my first muzzleloader deer but didn't get to put any backstrap on the bar BQ.

Nice buck.  Bum deal, but on a positive note , at least the pack out was light.    Its amazing how fast the coyotes can clean up a deer.

 I applaud you for going back and tagging that buck, some would have just continued hunting and forgotten about it. Congrats.

man i hate to say it but something not right i have cows that die and the yotes wont touch them for 4-5 days and the yotes wont break tell tell the skin pops....  i call bs on this sorry...

good on ya for tagging him. not everyone woulda done that. I too have tagged out and not recovered my animal. lake wenatchee area about 15 years ago I shot a HUGE 4x4 and never found him. cut the tag and went home the next day. at least you have yours for a euro mount or talk to the taxi and see if they can use another cape for ya. nice deer by the way especially for your first muzzy deer.

butcher98951: you are 100% incorrect, and to call bull on the story is pretty crappy the guy did the right thing and notched his tag. i know the area that they were hunting very well. i have seen the yotes clean up a deer in less then 12hrs. they are hungry and will gorge themselves on meat.

Really?  I have seen yotes absolutely devour a deer in an evening.

Glad you went back and got the rest of the story. Sorry you didn't get to put any meat in the freezer.

Someone poached a mature cow elk near my house.  I watched the coyotes gold and bald eagles, magpies devour it from my house with with my spotting scope.
All meat was gone in 2 days

 Dude this hunt was one of the best I have been on and to guide you on yor first muzzy buck and the challange of getting that close to them in open gound was fun I think in the coming ear it will make me even a better hunter! I feel real bad that you didn't get any meat out of the deal, I know dep inside for sure that I am not a horn hunter because even with a nice rack in my hands I didn't feel great about the deal! but there really wasn't more we could have done, of course hind sight is 20/20 but I think we played it right if we would have pressed even harder yesterday who knows where he might have ended up  with a unsure hit it is alway best to get the greneral area and wait let him blead out! Sorry man but atleast we are even you packed one out for me and I packed one out for you!

As for you butcher you can think what you want and call bs on what you want but don't ever call bs on my hunting tactics  Did you think we went down a canyon and tag someone elses deer that had no meat on its bones for a set of horns!
