where for mule deer?
«
on:
November 22, 2010, 06:17:03 PM »
I'm thinking of hunting the eastside in the early season next year for mule deer, and was wondering what areas people would recommend for that. I figure to camp out of the truck, or a tent somewhere, and hunt for three or four days as a DIYer. Friends of mine went to the Chiwawa unit (245) a few years ago and got one. Would like to find a place where a little hiking will get me away from truck hunters, and into some deer. Anybody got any GMU recommendations? Not looking for a trophy, just a nice hunt and hopefully some meat.
thanks!

Why not hit up your friend about the area he hunts
that is a good area

Are you looking at early archery, or early muzzleloader?

Looking at modern firearm. I was thinking of going east during the early firearm season in late October, and if I came up empty, I could still hunt the late blacktail season here at home. I may be able to convince another friend to come with me, too.
I got some info about where my friends hunted a few years ago, but in telling me about it, he didn't make it sound all that great, so I was checking to see what other people had to say, too.
How late do high buck seasons run? I was looking at some of the info on this site about the various GMUs :
http://www.huntwashingtonstate.com/HWS/200_series.htm.
I'm pretty new to hunting in general, and totally new to mule deer, but have been doing some reading about it. I like the idea of hunting somewhere where I could actually see more than 50 yards....

ah, never noticed that part of the regs about the high buck hunt, I'll have to look at that more. Can't do it in 2011, already have an important event during that time, but I think I could do it in 2012. For next year, I can hunt the early MF regular season, and am looking for a place to go for mule deer, that I can start scouting and researching as early as possible. Should be getting my 6.5 Swede project back from the smith this winter, and should have plenty of time to get that ready to go.

Why not hook up with your friends and hunt the Chiwawa. Problem is there is a fair amount of people that hunt there. But then again so it is with every GMU.

Well you might try heading over there and doing a little scouting. I was there this weekend and the migration has happened. A few weeks earlier would have been a good time to scout with the snow.
