Stillwater release site
« on: November 23, 2010, 10:22:45 AM »
So, im contemplating picking up a west side pheasant permit just to hunt for the week. I'm close to the still water release site so i was wondering if its possible for a single guy to go out with no dog and find some birds, or by this point is it pretty well hunted out and i should just save my money?
I hunt for peace of mind.

I'm not familiar with that particular release site, but I sure wouldn't spend $90 to hunt pheasants without the help of a dog. Your chances of even seeing a bird will be extremely low.

Releases stop at the end of this month.  They do them a couple times a week so there should be some brids around.  It's possible to get them without a dog but not real likely.

You might look into a three day license if you're still interested.

oh, a 3 day license ive never heard of that i will check that out, i went out and walked around the site just an hour ago saw some hunters and no birds, but i read that they release on Tuesday nights after hours, and then Friday and Saturday nights, so i was out at the worst possible day. so i might go out and check it out again tomorrow with that 3 day.

Thanks
I hunt for peace of mind.

You don’t need a dog for release site pheasants.  Almost half the birds that I shoot at release sites are pass shots, birds that are kicked up by other hunters.  Either they flush out of range or they are shot at and missed.  Between pass shots and kicking up birds yourself you can get some birds.

When you hear three or more shots in a row just look around for a flying bird, chances are they missed.  One or two shots, they probably killed it.

WARNING! They are only releasing birds one more time for the rest of the year @ the Snoqualmie sites. They do one big release, on Wednesday night for the holiday. It might be Tuesday night now that I think about it, and then they are done for the year.It is a zoo on the holiday weekend and while you can get one without a dog, it will be tough going this weekend for sure.

If you do decide to go, send me a PM and I can give you some detailed info on how to find birds on the Stillwater site.

Cheers
SD

EDIT:
I just got off the phone with WDFW and here is what I was told.
They will release birds on the Snoq. Valley sites Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. 60 birds per release at each site except 115 birds at Ebey Island.

So, it sounds like it night be worth it after all. Send me a PM if you want some detailed info on the sites.

Thanks for bringing this up Spencer. I'd driven by it a few times, always wondered whether it was worth trying for without dogs

Theres another site near snoqualmie though??

Season is over on the 30th except for a few sites down south.  No more birds released after tonight in Snoqualmie Valley.

I hunted Stillwater the last 2 days........I do not believe there have been any releases since Wednesday night. Talked with a Ranger on the way out who was checking limits and licences and he said he doubted they would be releasing any more.

Did manage to get a few Roosters today!!! Almost a double. The pup flushed them about 30 seconds apart.

NRA, Pheasants Forever, WWESSC.....tried to join Washington for Wildlife.org but my IP is banned???
