Hey y'all, I'm pretty knew to waterfowl (my first season) and I'm 15 so I have allot of time to learn !
But I was just wondering what u guys would recomend for geese. I'm really not looking for large numbers of geese. But what's the least amount of dekes u would use, and what would you recomend for a good beginner call?

welcome aboard! for us in our area we have always done best with between 12-24 dekes. anymore its hard to sound like that many birds. some areas you need a lot more just to get them intrested it seems. most time we use a dozen shells and 6 full bodied dekes. as far as a good beginner goose call. well the best one out there is the big river goose flute. i have spend hundreds in goose calls and always turn back to the big river! i just love the way it sounds!

here is a link so you can see what it looks like. they also make a wood one. i have the wood call, myself but my bud's have the camo ones and they sound great as well. very easy to work and get good sounds out of.

Good advice right there!  The big river goose flute is easy to blow but those short reeds sound killer when you learn em.

Dekes, anywhere from 6-1000.  Depends on where you're setup and if you're trafficking em or not.

Location as always is key!

Last season I was hunting a field with a friend and we had 18 full bodies out.  The guy in the next field had 2.  Not 2 dozen, 2 decoys.  The birds were flaring from our set but the guy with the 2 dekes limited by 9:30am.

Any of you guys use basin calls? They look pretty good but I'm not gonna pay that much without some feedback from guys who use them :p

Basin Calls are nice but take a look at saunders calls. http://www.billsaunderscalls.com/pages/calls.asp?cat=Canada Goose Calls

The Saunders Original is a great beginner call if you want a quality call. If that makes sense.

There are a lot of fine calls out there that can be had for relatively cheap.

One thing that is more important than having a call that is the best or the coolest looking is knowing how to use is correctly. Getting a good calling dvd will help you out a lot. Also get with someone who has a lot of experience with a short reed and you will learn even quicker.

Start off with a dozen and see what you can do.  They will come right in if your hunting small or private fields.  Small fields we usually will run 6 -36.  Depends on scouting how decoys shy, etc.  Big open areas sometime we will run up to 16 dozen DSD.

Checked out the saunders calls, that 15-klr i have seen in a few pics on here....
dont we mostly have cacklers in washington?

Lessers, greaters, cacklers. The I5KLR might be tougher to learn on than the Original.

I've seen alot of birds coming in and out of that area but I've never taken the time to walk back and check it out.  Was planning on doing it over christmas break.  Should be better back there once pjeasant ends this week i believe.   Careful you dont plunk one of those juvenile swans that occasionally co mingle with the geese.  A lot of swans in the area this time of year.
