2010 Minnesota Whitetail
« on: November 27, 2010, 03:19:59 PM »
My buddy has family with a 300 acre farm in Minnesota we are able to hunt. This was my second year there but my first whitetail. Not too much of a story, just lots of cold days sitting in a tree stand or ground blind. On the 4th day it was below zero with the wind chill when I was sitting in a ground blind at the corner of a plowed corn field when I saw this buck come trotting along about 200 yards out. I waited until he slowed and turned broadside and shot him about 65 yards with a 12 gauge. Decent older buck with good mass, double eyeguards and 18 1/2" wide. Teeth were wore down and had a slight roman nose so looked to be an older buck. Pretty slow overall this year for by buddy and his family as we received a little bit of everything as far as weather.

Thanks for the comments. Not sure what it weighed but not a huge body. I would guess 225-250 lbs.

Nice Buck!!  You can be very proud of a first whitetail like that!  I'm a Minnesota deer hunter on my way very soon to hunt for mule deer in Washington.  I've hunter mule deer with my bow, but have yet to get one.  I'm hoping rifle season in WA is going to be the difference.  Good hunting to you. ;)

I grew up in northern MN and yes, yes it does. We would leave deer shot on opening day hang for the whole season with no issues, in fact usually frozen stiffer than a board.

Yes, I've sat many days on the deer stand in below zero weather, usually late in the rifle season or during muzzle loader season and December bow season. But it deer hunting so it's worth it.

Woodchuck, Where in northern MN are you from?  I live in Carlton and hunt mostly in southern St Louis County.

Jackmaster, Just wear heavy gloves or use a hand muff with a hand warmer in it.  I have had my bloody hand stick to my rifle barrel after gutting out my buck though.  :chuckle:

Gotta go guys, Time to to hit the bow stand.  It's beautiful here today, sunny and in the mid 50s (above zero)!  ;)

Yes indeed, I miss it sometimes but then the thought of checking calves in the middle of the night and the thermometer in the barn reading -50 usually shakes it off.
