Archery Elk Down...Finally!
«

I woke up late because I was so tired from the last few days of hunting hard. I actually had to talk my self it to going hunting. It was pretty hard to do since there was so much football to watch. I finally decided to go hunting because that is why I have a dvr, right? After taking my time to get ready, I realized that my boot dryer wasn't plugged in so I had to wear a pair of boots that still squeak a bit when I walk...great way to start a day of hunting. Sleeping in and wearing boots that are so new they squeak. What a great day it was!
I ended up spotting some elk bedded on the timber edge a soon as I arrived to my spot. I love elk bedded near tall timber. It just makes a stalk so much easier. As I watched 8 cows for a bit they eventually got up after their nap and slowly started into the timber...I needed to get in the timber and get on them.
As I eased into the timber I found the wind to be perfectly in my face...then it began to snow...even better. To top off my already great conditions I could hear chirps and mews as I eased in closer. I decided I was close enough and pulled out my Montana Decoy flasher to maybe help close the extra yards needed to fill my tag. Suddenly I saw movement directly in front of me. I slowly put the decoy down not to give away my location. I quickly had 3 small cows/calves in front of me around 20-30yards with just marginal shot opportunity. Not alerted to my presence I decided to wait for a good shot.
2 of the cows moved down the hill together and the other headed towards me...I drew my bow and thought 20 yards and released a bad arrow. I did not want it to hit where it did! I quickly nocked another arrow and the elk fell over at just 20 yards...I hit high and back, but luckily hit the dorsal aorta...I had my elk...Only 200yards from the road. 3 tags filled all with my LimbSaver Proton at 20 yards or less. It has been a great season. Sometimes things have to go a little bit wrong to go right in the end!
I have a friend that works for Montana Decoy...I had to pose with it!
In the field picture...there is some blood on that arrow. Complete pass through.
A herd that I watched for a few days. I wish I could have shot that bull...Antlerless only area

Great job on getting close. I am totally hooked on those Montana elk decoys. I used the same one to close the distance quite a few times in Montana. Had a bull screaming his head off at 23yrds coming in for love on that same decoy. I was calling for a buddy and he shot a bit high and missed him by inches. Thats why it's called hunting.

I bet when you cook those steaks, you can not tell the diff. in the taste of a cow or a bull.
