Quick Sunday morning hunt!

 Ya, the title pretty much says everything. We should have had more geese, but bad shooting and the birds landing outside of shooting range pretty much had us at a stand still. Overall it was a great hunt with great friends. O, and finally got to put my hands on a very rare and elusive bird.

The pic doesn't do justice to the size of some of those greenheads there were a couple bigger and meatier than the cacks. Good times!!

Less then 8,000 left and in decline. They base the the 2a and 2b seasons on counts of there wintering grounds. Plus all of Northwest OR It is a huge debate down here, they have a goose task force to deal with it.

So, did you get your card punched for shooting the dusky?  If your going to take one, make sure it at least has a green or red collar.    Looks like a fun shoot.

Chester, way to go!! Its not a Dusky. Its a Vancouver. I just let it go for awhile to see how many people are quick to be hatters.

   Those are  rare. Im pretty sure ive seen a couple but just too scared to shoot for fear that it might come up short when it hits the ground. Good job on pulling one out though.

A case of ground shrinkage would really suck when shooting dark Vancouvers, especially if you hit a double.  I shot one last season but mostly I’m scared to pull the trigger on them.

I dont understand... Nothing wrong with to Cacks in my opinion. Dusky's are bigger than Vancouvers. They are more close in size to a big Western.

Order is off there, vancouvers are one size down from westerns, dusky's are smaller then Couvs. Closer in size to a lesser

Vancouver Canada Goose  - Description
• Color is dark and similar to dusky.
• Culmen length 50 to 60 mm
• The Vancouver is of comparable size to the western.

Dusky Canada Goose (Dusky)  - Description
• Dark-colored; often with little color differentiation between neck and head. A few birds may have a neck ring. Color is a 5 or less on the Munsell soil color chart. Collar colors are red or green.
• Culmen length 40 mm to 50 mm.

Cackling Goose (Cackler)  - Description
• Very small goose, similar to the size of a mallard, slightly larger.
• Breast dark brown, sometimes with a white neck ring. Juveniles are generally lighter in color. If collared, the collar is yellow.
• Culmen (bill) length of less than 32 mm. Head appears “puffy.”

The only sure way to tell a Vancouver from a Dusky is to measure the culmen. 
Greater than 50mm = Vancouver, less than 50mm = dusky.  Exactly 50mm (flip a coin).

Our group has taken 5 Vancouvers over the last 4 yers. All checked by the dept. They are big birds, unless those are the worlds largest cacklers and mallards it is probably a dusky.

It was checked by WDFW. They said it was a Couv. Im taking there word on it!
