MPI versus McMillian?
« on: December 26, 2010, 09:05:07 PM »
Does anyone have experience owning or shooting both MPI and McM stocks?

McMillan yes....run from the MPI!

I have seen way to many MPI's break and crack.  With McMillans, Manners, HS, you just won't have any issues and the fit will be perfect.

sand on a mpi and you will find creative use of popsicle sticks. sand on a mc millan and you will find a fiberglass layer over one of a few different fills. they are expensive, but they sell for what you paid for them later in life. buy an mpi and finish it, paint it, bed it....then see if it still a bargain.

Well that's a first for me.
I've never seen anybody ask for opinions on McMillan and MPI in the same post before.
They cant even really be compared.
McMillan is light years ahead of MPI.

It's funny to read varying opinions on different things.  I have read on other forums all the reasons why McMillian sucks, why MPI sucks, why everything sucks.  There's a pretty lengthy thread in our archives here that go on and on about different synthetic stocks.  I just wondered if anyone had both and could compare.  From my own research, McM customer service is lacking, but the general consensus is their product is top notch.  I have a 375 HH to re-stock, and don't want the thing coming apart in in the middle of a "dangerous game" encounter.  Boyd's quit selling my favorite laminated stock in left hand or I'd just go with that.

I do appreciate the opinions though.

hyde, mpi's do not suck, they are good stocks....but, they will need finishing and by the time that is done you will be right near the price of a mc m. the beauty of a mc stock is they are always a good finish.....sans a few micro chips. there are a billion collor choices in mc swirlys and they never rub off. I have a mag fill on my 375H&H and would recomomend standard fill of you go the mc m route, unless you are trying to fatten the thing up. the only guns I have ever seen bust bedding were my 6.5lb 300rum and a very light 338 lapua. it would take a sub 7lb 375 before I would begin to worry about bedding issues. both are good stocks. a used mpi can fetch 250 bux, a used mc m, depending on model can bring 350-500, so resale might want to be considered.

HS stocks are pretty tough to beat for the $$. they are not as friendly to my hands and a bit heavy, but well constructed. if you like their offereings it is a good value. just do yourself a favor and never handle any mc millans as you will be stuck on them like me.

I may look at an HS stock for a Rem 700 project, but they don't offer anything for my A-Bolt 375.  I have an A2 McM on order for my left hand 22-250, and will just wait and see how I like it.  I am not trying to make a light rig, especially in 375.  I don't mind toting a heavier rifle at all, the most important thing for me is how it balances.  McMillan is telling me 3-4 months on my current order.  MPI quoted 6 weeks for a fully finished stock for the 375.
