Doe tags in Montana?
« on: December 01, 2010, 06:41:18 PM »
I'm having a hard time understanding how the Montana "Doe" tags work.  I'm currently reading the online Montana Regs, but having a hard time getting it.  If I just want to kill a doe, do i need to get an "A" license first?  Or can i just buy an antlerless tag over the counter?  Post or PM would be much appreciated.

You can buy a B tag over the counter if they have any left for the area(s) you want to hunt.  As of a month or so ago, they didn't seem to have many left for the areas we were interested in.  They usually keep the current list of extra tags pretty well up to date on the website, but it's best to call them and ask.

what do i need in order to buy the tags?  Its my understanding that i have to have an "A" tag first, and then can tack a "B" Tag on top of it?  And do i need to buy a Montana license before i can buy the tag?

I'm pretty sure it's the same as the last time I was over there.  We had to buy the $5.00 conservation license and then just the B tag(s).  We didn't have to draw A tags first.  We just bought them when we got to Malta and we've also bought them other years in Jordan without any A tag.  I think they were $75.00 each for the first tag, then $50.00 for the second and $25.00 for third and any others (depending on how many were available for each person).  Some years, you could buy up to 5 or more.  I don't think the herds are like that now though.
