mulehunter, your family deserves to come first, I think everyone can understand that. Keep up your posts about your hunt during pursuit season too. Threads like this are good for the sport, for people to see what hound hunting really is all about.

Machias, I liked the way the Stevens/Pend Orielle hunt went. It is my opinion that boot hunters should be allowed to take out whatever adult cat they are lucky enough to have a chance at, and with some simple training, hound hunters can easily identify a tom, and with a tom-only hound hunt the hound season stays open longer.

In any healthy animal population it is arguable that both males and females need to be harvested. Boot hunters obviously will get females harvested, and with a tom-only season the toms will get harvested.

The politics of having any hound season are complicated in Washington. Remember, seasons are based on public safety, not on sport hunting or the best wildlife management principles. It will be interesting to see how the legislature reacts to the tom-only season which was a last minute decision by WDFW.

I personally think it's probably a good idea to harvest the old mature toms who push younger toms into new territories where they get in trouble and these older toms can cause problems themselves when they get too old to hunt wild game and start looking for easier prey like pets, livestock, and kids. :twocents:

I think if the WDFW explains this well enough to the legislature they can justify the tom-only season. We will see what happens, at some point legislators will have to approve a renewal of the cougar hound hunting program or it will end. :twocents:

like i said before if we had some other opportunitys to run dogs than it wouldnt be a problem for anyone to draw. its more than likely that is the only way most people will get a cat let alone see one, so i think alot of people are willing to pay for that expeirence. as machias stated he got to run his dogs 3 times in 2 years, same thing happened to me and my family. i dont have the money to run to idaho, maybe oregon i guess, so theres very few chances for me to run here. you say you want more people involved but how is that possible when your average hound guy cant even run his dogs anymore

anyways happy hunting and keep em treed ;)

Well, I won't be applying for any cougar permits myself. I would if I could afford to pay an outfitter, but I can't. Not in the budget right now. In the future I could see myself doing that. I think a guy should really be in good shape if he intends to follow dogs around the mountains, and that's another reason I wouldn't put in for it right now. There's no way I would keep up.

Hound Pursuit Season
I have talked to some people in WDFW in the past about the idea of an over the counter license for a hound pursuit season. I think there are people in WDFW who would support this idea. I have also mentioned this to the Wildlife Commission and to a few legislators, I don't think they are all opposed to the idea.

To get traction, we need letters and phone calls of support to the WDFW, the Wildlife Commission, and to legislators on the right committee. We also need sporting groups and law enforcement endorsement of the idea.

How many people are willing to help? pm me so we don't jack mulehunters thread. Sorry mulehunter....

:)   last night went scouting 6 cys cut two. One cut between 11 am to 11 pm.  So i went other cy and cut most fresh. Slept for two hours this morning then we went up when light get better i put two on and got on fire. Treed cougar and it is Tom with collar.  My first cat I ever treed with wdfw collar.
:bash:  then decide to go back to old cut. Between 18 to 24 hrs old. I decide to give a try.     they did amazing job working all way over in to worst diffuclt terrian I ever had been to.  I knew its going happen.   :chuckle:  end up long long way out of country. We spennd whole day to find signal. We will never made to our dogs before dark. We ain't give up and my dogs end up down hole win all worst cliff and steep cliffs with four ft snow. I don't know how I got myself down and found them stuck on cliff. One hound fell down in half way and end up stuck. I had to climb up cliff and threw her off the cliff in to snow.   :o
Finally got leash on my dogs and start climb up like 70 degree cliff crawling paddle at 700 yds.  Finally got up half way getting better slope hill to hike but still 3 half to four ft snow.

Never again.  Almost had two cougars today. Dang. At least one today.

Cheers...

Mulehunter.

Be careful of avalanche!  3-4' on steep slope can be dangerous.
