Inconsiderate Hunters
« on: December 02, 2010, 10:18:08 PM »
Hunted Nisqually today. Thursday. Got up damn early. Paddled my canoe up McAllister Cr 2 hours before shooting hours. I was the first one at the launch. I waited to set decoys untill just before legal shooting hours. While I was setting up I saw a light just down from me in the fog. I shined my 120 lumen flashlight at them a couple times but they seemed to stay put so I walked over to them. '5' of them. 4 men and a woman. And a dog. I told them I'd been there for two hours and that I was just down from them. They assured me they'd share the spot and it'd be ok. They were under 100 yds from me. This is Thursday. Hardly anyone out. They could have gone anywhere. They showed up right at shooting time. Well, as you could guess, it didn't work out to well for me. It seemed every time a Bufflehead flew by they opened up on it then if they hit something they had to shoot quite a few cripple shots. They had a black lab. Maybe he doesn't retrieve. I got two shots and got two ducks. Every time I had ducks looking over my spread, they'd start shooting at something. I picked up at about 10:30 out of frustration. I stopped and gave them my opinion as I paddled by them.
Even the waterfowl regs suggest a minimum of 200 yds for a separation. I was in a canoe. They were in a huge boat with a large outboard. They could have gone some place else easily when they found out I was already there.
Where do these inconsiderate people come from? I would never do that to someone.

I've had that happen before.  :bash: I have a buddy from Moses that had something similar happen... guy setup 70-80yrds away across from him.. same kind of knuckle heads show up right before shooting hrs etc... what do ya do right... well they each get a little shooting in and my buddy starts working a dozen or more greenheads. they work mostly near my buddy's spread then swing hi and wide over the other guys... They do a lot of shooting and nothing falls..... My buddy is pissed... Sees a buffle head cruzing low their direction... Tells his old man "Pass me the 10 gauge"... as the buffle head passes between him and the other guys he lets loose with 3 shots.... they guys don't say squat just load their Chit and leave! he said it was kinda funny all you heard was the rustle and bustle of packing up their crap and the motor of their boat fire up...  :chuckle:

I've seen this a lot with waterfowl and dove hunting.  And also the guys that want to use the blind and drive up to it in the daylight.....Ummm---can't you see all the decoys????  Then turn suddenly and kick a big wake towards the blind.  Not just limited to hunting, fishing can get pretty bad some days.

1st off i wasnt there.. 2nd if your fricken stupid enough to set up that close when someone shines a bright ass light at you to let you know "Hey buddy I'm right here in you back pocket", and to top it off you have no hunting courtesy then guess what..... Maybe you should have you brain examined..
I had some ass hat set up 30yrds from me near Vancouver lake after i shined my light at him... I said "hey buddy you think you can set up any closer to me?" so he moved a whopping 60yrds away...  :bash: there was plenty of room... WTH are people thinking?

People attract other people.  I bet you could set up in an area far from your best spot, and most would follow you there too.

I will definitely agree that it sucks when that happens, but your on public land. I know I'm in the minority on this topic but in that case, I would have moved. I've rowed that entire place in a marsh rat and get around quick. What I've always seen is the guys that are new to the area go up McAllister and hunt there so I stay as far from there as possible. Go where the big boats can't and don't worry about those a-holes.

I was hunting at Fir island two weeks ago, and I usually am on spot with decoys out a hour before the shooting starts.  Not many out there can say that, most show up 10 to 15 minutes prior. So I am set up got my labs sitting with me and have a good two steay hours of noone else around. Then I hear the sound of decoys :dunno: I cant see the guy, but boy I can hear him, so I decide to stand up, and there is he is 25 yards in front of me.  I dont know how he didnt see my spread, and if I didnt stand up and locate him it oculd have been a very bad day.  >:(

Public land.  It happens more often than not, I’ve grown used it.

The guy i duck hunt with the most and I are out EARLY....usu the first at the ramp, the first in the water and the first in our hidey hole...we will have the Dekes out, boat in the hole or us in the blind and having coffee and sandwiches when we hear folks motoring along looking for a place to set up.  We will hit them with the spotlight and USUALLY they keep going...tho we have had one or two set up close to us...and then skybust anything flying...usually doesnt last tho.

We DO get there first, because we are UP at 0300 and on the water by 4:30-5:00....and are SET and waiting for daylight.  I have little patience with the latecomers.  But they are free to do as they will, hopefully NOT near us.

Purposefully aiming a 10 gauge at people that are 70 - 80 yards away and touching off 3 rounds doesn't sound very safe IMO.  Some people....  You're lucky they didn't get hit, or pack up and come pay you a little visit.

He was aiming at the bird. The people that wet up w/ in 70-80 yards were the ones who failed to consider safety.

I had a guy come through the burbank slough right through my decoy spread twice in a boat the first time I was up set the second time I told my buddy that he is lucky those anger management classes they made me go to in high school paid off because I was for sure this guys boat wasn't gonna make it back to the dock. I don't know why people think it is ok to do stuff like that. I feel like a real ass hole when i feel like I messed up somebodys hunt or moved in on there area  :dunno:

In the smaller bodies of water, you cannot help but have guys (myself included) go trolling thru your spread. No way thru without doing so.... We always chat it up with guys about their dekes  and how they are doing....with no problems.

As far as guys setting up too close, I have had it done to us, and I actually set up way to close to some guys once, we could not see their dekes, and they never let us know they were there... We started leaving a small light on, on our blind in the early am so guys can see us at setup time. Then as sunrise approaches, we ditch the light...

we always shared the small ponds throughout the Idaho desert land. One morning we got set up,thought we had the pond to ourselves. My uncle Dave though he was the greatest duck caller of modern times..And he called using his voice..After a few hrs of nothing flying in,a voice across the pond yelled, here duck, come big ducks..I laughed so hard..
