What Does a Yote Warning Call Sound Like?
« on: December 04, 2010, 11:24:58 AM »

Just starting with calling, and I want to make sure that I know to avoid warnings when challenging. Anybody got an audio or video clip for a warning call?

Coyote smack talking.  :chuckle:

This means your busted.  Dont make this sound.  :chuckle:
Coyote Bark

This is more of a challenge howl but if they do it repeatedly and dont come any closer it can mean they busted you.  Might want to try some female whimpers or pup distress if they are hung up making this sound.

Very hard to hear but here is a coyote that gets hung up with warning/challenge barks.  As soon as he switches to pup distress he comes right on in.   The decoy dog is pretty cool to.

I thought of posting that one, but you can hear crap. But the thing is, its one of my fave vids out there. You can learn a lot from watching that video. I have watched it probably close to 30 times. Watch the body posture of that coyote and how he reacts to the call. Very good video.

Tony was fortunate to get that scenario on tape BUT that is NOT normally how a coyote would react .
In my oppinion , if the decoy dog and the decoy itself were not in the mix that coyote would have never come in any farther .
What i am saying is don't depend on a pup distress to be the magic bullet that brings in a coyote that is giving a warning bark .
Nothing wrong with trying it , but don't sit there scratching your head if it doesn't work as ill guarantee you most of the time it wont.

I didn't think the yote could see the dog. I knew it could see the decoy. I have had a lot of hang ups with fawn/rabbit distress calls. then switch to a pup distress or yote death cry and have them come in. I always finish a stand with one of these calls. I have really been surprised how many i have had come in after switching. I am no master and have a ton left to learn, but i have seen this same thing happen 2 me a few times. To see a yote come in and hang up or sit and bark. then come in when they here the pup or death cry. I picked up on the use of the pup distress and death cry from a video like this. I never use to use those sounds unless i shot one or missed one :chuckle: now i use them on ever stand.

I have had similar luck with pup distress also.  I dont believe anything is the magic bullet but if there is a better go-to sound for a hung up dog I am all ears.

I knew i would get some HEAT on this subject , Let me explain my reasoning for my thoughts.
this pup distress thing is getting to be what most think is a magic bullet for calling in hung up or educated coyotes . yes it is effective SOMETIMES . Have you ever tried a simple lip squeak or any sound that is a high frequency? it also works. Im not saying the pup distress is never used by me , but i do SAVE this sound and try not to use it if i dont HAVE to . Not all coyotes are callable and i see no reason to use one sound that is a great sound for getting EDUCATED coyotes to come take a look to be used on just any audiance. Now that trapping is no longer legal in our state without jumping thru hoops educated or as i call them uncallable coyotes need to be handled with a special offering if you ever want to see them at all .
what i have seen latley on videos and on web sites are alot of attention being focused on this sound . lets say you have 100 callers in eastern washington all ending the set with pup distress  or useing it as a end all be all call, how long would it take to befor very few coyotes would come to investigate this sound after being shot at because a caller is useing it as a ( well nothing is showing up , lets try a pup distress) . As for Tonys video i said it will work , but it is NOT normal coyote behavior to come to that sound or any for that matter knowing full well there is Danger in the immediate area(the reason for the warning bark). There are several sounds i SAVE thruout the year, that way i have them available when i really need them .Maybe you guys dont need to do this but when doing control work you need all the tricks you can get . I saw the same thing happen several years ago when everyone started howling at coyotes without knowing what sounds to make , it made alot fewer coyotes respond to a howl of any type.
you guys know they learn fast .

No HEAT Jerry. just sharing personal thoughts. love to share diffrent perspectives. And yours is welcome at any time. I use a lot of diffrent calls. I have used nothing but lip squeaks to call yotes before. When i setup were i know there is a yote close, a lot of the time that's all i use. If my uncle wasn't with me one time. as a witness no one would believe me on this one. We were deer hunting and a pack of 8 yes 8 yotes came out of the mouth of a canyon we were going into. I was mad as heck, i told my uncle watch this. We got behind some bitter brush and i started lip squeaking. All there heads tunred and they were on a dead rush 2 me. They were about 450 yards away. The young dogs got there first and paid the price.  :chuckle: I call about 90% private ground, being land we own or  lease. Most of the yotes in my area have not been educated. Most call work well, but like i have said the yote death cry and pup distress is my bread and butter. It has worked a lot for me, on yotes that would not come in. Or on stands that i am getting ready to leave from.

No heat from me either.  I am always looking for another trick and thought maybe you could suggest an alternative.  I am not saying it is a magic bullet but I have seen pup distress bring in yotes that had everything else thrown at them and even after shots were fired.  Something about it triggers some reckless behavior in some dogs (not always female either).  Lip squeaks are another great alternative as well as the female whimper (I have not personally mastered this sound yet) that is another high pitched sound.  Love getting all the advice I can get though.

I am not set on what i always start with. It depends on the time of year. Are they in sex mode or food mode, do they have pups defending territory? etc. The only thing that is set for me is what i finish a stand off with. That is either the yote death cry or pup distress.

If my memory is correct, the "sex mode" is in January, mating season. Correct me if I'm wrong. :chuckle:

So how do you start off your sets? What do they consist of?
Ill be doing a seminar in lacey on jan 8th and can answer alot of your questions, try to attend, youll learn alot .
already seen a few paired up , probably just hunting together , its still a lil early for breeding season and the way they are still coming to the call i feel pretty confident that they have not started yet , its going to start getting harder to call them in soon .  here is a tips page i wrote several years ago , alot of it does not apply anymore due to the new models of FoxPro callers but there is still alot of good info for the beginners. hope it helps you out .

I just put this on my calender.  So I will be there.  Great information you have provided by the way.  Will FoxPro give out discounts on their Prairie Blaster?  :)

Discuss about the phases of yote hunting.
What makes a good decoy and is having the ability to turn the decoy off and on remotely a desired feature?
From each phase what is a good typical set up to use.  If you have time what are some suggested changes to the typical sounds if the yote hangs up to increase the probability of getting them into shooting range.

When hunting during the muzzleloader season. there was several pairs already together, but like said they are just hunting right now. It's cold out and right now they are hungry. I hope to start chasing them soon. Been busy, getting caught up. After my late hunts.

A lot of folks will tell you to use a pup distress or adult distress after the first coyote is shot, to try and stop the second coyote.  90% of the time I still prefer to get back on the distress sound that brought them into the call at this time of year.  Especially, if they have come in during the first 15 minutes of a stand.  I have called pairs to me and shot one at 50 yards while another is 15 yards from me, and have called back that close coyote to within 20 yards again.  When you have a sound that has brought them in, then a lot of times the gunshot will not totally deter the second coyote from coming back.
Dreams are forever on the mind, realization in the hands.

You should like this one.  Next time your calling and a coyote is giving you some lip, maybe he isnt talking to you after all.   :yike:
