Son's first late season hunt
« on: December 04, 2010, 06:44:08 PM »
My brother and I took my son out today for his first late season hunt for antlerless MD and WT.  Lots of hiking through the snow.  Got on 'em but not close enough.  Good time was had by all.  Headed out in the morning to give it another shot.  Will post photos when he scores.  Good luck to all hunting late season.

Had a good clear morning with a stiff NE wind.  With the wind we didn't see anything.  Drove a couple canyons after coffee and came up on three does in a creek bottom just off the road.  Let my son out and kept going.  Parked a couple hundred yards above him, grabbed my pack and with his cousin, headed back toward him.  Rounded a bend just in time to see him draw and let off for what I didn't know at the time would have been the third shot.  Got to him and noticed two arrow missing from his quiver.  He said he thought his first shot at 30 yards was a good hit but took a second at 50 yards as the Muley doe went up the hill away from the creek.  Looked for blood but didn't see any where he said the deer was standing.  Scanned the area and found the blood.  Good blood trail and could tell the deer was hit well.  Sent the boys on the trail with a radio and headed back to get the truck.  Wasn't 2 minutes and I got a call; "Bandit this is snowman, we got the package.  The doe was facing my son head on the first shot hit her in the basket.  She bled out in less than two minutes and was only 35 yards from where she was shot.  Pics are the result.  Good job son!  Way to close a good season.

Nice doe- tell your son I always shoot the does over a buck.  :) Better eating.  I shot my first doe with my grandfather and great uncle, which I will never forget. I am sure that your son feels the same about his first.

Congrats.

Austin Great Job!   8)  Way to go! You'll never forget that deer or the hunt.  Next time I want Nick to carry that out on his back for ya. LOL.  Talked with your Dad he is pretty proud of ya.  She is a nice size doe too.  It will be good eating!  Great job.   :IBCOOL:
