Smokers can be made out of many things. I made one by welding two 55 gallon drums together. Now everyone wants to borrow it. I've smoked hams and bacon and all kinds of stuff in it.
I make a row of briquettes in the bottom and start the front end of them with a torch. About 1/3rd of the way back from the begginning, I put two to three handfulls of wood chips on the coals (I like cherry). Once the coals burn back that far, they start to smolder (smoke) the chips. Works pretty good!
I drilled holes in the side of the upper drum and put steel rods through so I can hang meat from them or put wire racks across them and then set the meat on the racks.
I also made a door on both drums for access. Not too hard to do or think of.
I'm always loaning it out to others.
