Re boring a Savage Model 24 .223 12 gauge to .243

The model 24 is the over under rifle shotgun.. the 223 12 gauge is still available new... I have been contemplating getting one...  i do not know much about gun smithing so my question is Would it be possible to re bore and chamber the single shot to .243? I thinkfor this state it would be the best combo gun cause you could shoot cougar bear yote or deer... Close or far... I have never seen the case of a 243... is it close to the 223 case size? are the pressure differences big? What is the approximate cost to have something like that re bored and chambered?

The cases are not even close.  The .243 is based on a .308 case.  I think you would have better luck trying to find an older one in 30-30\12gauge.  That is the one I am looking for next.

So mabe if i want to hunt all predators i need to find a slug that shoots well out of the shotgun and use that for killing bear... I guess that would be the only way to keep a light round and still get the opportunity to kill a bear... Since a you can use a .223 to kill everything except that... I lso guess that if your using it to hunt timber or timber edges most shots are gona be 200yrds and closer... so either may work...

Where did you find a new production 24?  Savages web sight had no mention of it that I could find.

I found it on their sight one in the last month and couldn't re find it.  I think its strange because its a unique product that no one else offers... Either they don't sell that many, or they don't make much off them.... If i ran their site i'd be promoting the hell out of the gun... If a single shot like the TC can be such a good seller then the double gun should have a chance at doing ok.  If you really want one you need to go talk to a gun shop dealer... That's how i got my 22lr 20 ga...

Another option is to rebore the rifle to 6X45. but i think the cheaper option would be to pick up the 30-30 over 12 gauge. you could handload the .30-30 with pointed bullets

 :)all of them I have shot were not very accurate, like 6 inch groups at 100 yards, and the two barrels did not have the same point of impact. Good idea but hard to build, look at the cost of european doubles that do shoot fairly well.

I've had the same experience. I've got a .22 mag over 20, a .22lr over 20, and a .22lr over .410 and none of them are very accurate.  Don't have one in a .223 yet so can't say for sure on them.

I have a little 223 over 20ga that is quite accurate.  I can cover 3 shots at 200 yrd with my hand and that's with an old 3x scope that isn't the greatest for shooting paper but works ok for coyote hunting. The shotgun prints close enough that I can use the scope for the shotgun barrel.  I'm going to drop a 2x10 scope on it to shoot a few groups and I'll post them when I've done it.

Sounds about the same as my .223 over .20, but I have only tried one bullet weight with it so I am not ready to give up on it.  .308 over .20 would be nice.

I recall Remington having some sort of import deal with an arms make over in a former soviet bloc country that made rifle/shotgun combos and I think those are still available new, but maybe not from Remington.  It is called the Remington Spartan SPR94 made by Baikal Arms of Russia.

OH, I grew up shooting a Savage .222/20 Ga.  I loved that gun.  I have been looking for a similar gun for the last few years.  It wouls be nice to have a .243/12 Ga.  Good luck.

It really likes short bullets, I'm shooting Speer 52gr FB HP's over Benchmark and 46gr Win HP's over a light load of 2400(22 hornet kind of a load).

Tried 50gr NBT's but they shoot patterns.  The Speers are just a great bullet lots of KO and still fur friendly.

Reboring and rechambering for 243 would not only be prohibitively expensive, but would be unsafe even if you COULD find a 'Smith' to do the work.   

Better would to be find a 30-30/20 gauge as has already been mentioned.  They are around if you look hard enough.  I have one that I can't say enough good about, shoots sub minute of angle groups with a Williams receiver sight and handles spitzers safely being a single shot.  I shoot just heavy cast bullets through mine, 180grs @ over 2000 fps, and still get 2" 100 yard groups.

I never realized there are so many of you with the model 24 savages... I love my 22lr 20 ga shoot pretty good and have killed lots of rabbits and grouse with it... Maybe just the 223 12 gauge would be fine if i just got some good slugs to shoot through it in case of seeing a bear...

My dad has two of the 22/410 Savage's which is what my brother and I used to shoot our first grouse. We only had one back then, but recently he found another one at a garage sale or an auction (can't remember which) and bought it so he'd have two. I think he's wanting to have one for each of my two daughters when they get old enough to hunt. I hadn't shot grouse with it for years until just recently. Last year I was over in the Naches area helping a friend on an early permit elk hunt in September and I brought it along because it doesn't take up much space in the truck. I ended up killing three nice blue grouse with it. That was pretty cool since I hadn't shot a grouse with it for 30 years or more.

  Just found out the The model 24 was discontinued as of November 1, 2008. i don't know why they had it on the sight like a month ago...  Now i guess if i find one i have to buy it.
