Desert hunt so far.
« on: December 01, 2010, 07:24:34 PM »
Seeing lots of deer, some real nice ones in the 28" range.  Lots of 22/24" deer, and small forkies and such.  Snow has it a little tuff to sneak up close enough.  A little crunchy, and now its raining.  Not sure what that might do to the morning hunt.  Hope it doesnt freeze on top of the snow.  Dont need anymore crunch than we already have.  Having a ball seeing so many nice to real nice size deer.  Keep ya posted.

Well it took 5 days for me to get into range of a desert buck.  Today, i was able to sneak within 38 yds of a 25/26" 3 point.  Not the biggest buck I have seen this week but a very fine buck.  Long story short, I shanked it.  Not sure why or how, but just plain missed.  Totally sick feeling.  Wasnt my first ever miss, and wont be my last but damn it hurt.  Well there is always tomorrow, and we will try again.  Did I mention 38 yds.  broadside.

Well, I had to come back to work so I guess that I will not fill my desert archery tag.  What a hunt, I saw severel deer in the 28" range.  Heavy horns, long tines, many bucks small to large in size.  The weather made it tough.  CRUNCHY snow made stalking a very difficult thing to do.  But that being said, I was able to sneak within 38 yds of a very solid 3x3.  Shanked the shot that I should have been able to do in my sleep.  O'well life will go on and I will probably not loose the image in my mind I have of that buck at that distance, broadside, without a clue that I was there.  I had heard that the desert is not the tag it used to be.  That may very well be so.  But dont think that there are not some damn fine bucks still in the desert.  Great hunt, and would love to draw it again.

Thanks for sharing DC....that Unit is extremely difficult to hunt with a rifle.  I can't image an archery tag.  It is nice to be in a location without cars and people all over though!

I hope you draw it again!
