Idaho Elk hunting Question

Alright, well i've never hunted Idaho before and have been thinking about doing so this coming year for Archery elk. I have been doing some research and noticed they have certain zones you have to pick and choose which one you want to hunt. So I am just wondering what would be a good zone to hunt elk? Thanks any suggestions would be great! Thanks guys!

HOw many times can you make it over here for a hunt. That will help you decide what unit.

If its only a week or something I'd be applying for a permit only area that is a draw so you have good, really good odds. Otherwise pick a area that has archery and rifle and muzzleloader as options so you can come over a few times to figure the area etc.

10A is a great unit but they only give out a limited number of tags

Panhandle tag.  Opens up all units in N. Idaho Panhandle.  Massive public land and big bulls.

A friend had suggested the panhandle unit also, I have the first 2 weeks of September to hunt, and after that i'll be hunting weekends only. I'm really looking forward to it, but just didn't want to buy a tag for a unit that didn't have much elk.

Head for a unit that doesn't have the wolves in it.  There will be far greater numbers of elk.  Also you can do some research on the Idaho fish and game website that shows which units are above, below, or at elk population objectives.  That should get you starteed.

10A is not part of the Panhandle zone. The Panhandle zone includes units 1, 2, 3, 4, 4A, 5, 6, 7, and 9.  You will need to decide on an "A" or "B" tag, depending on the zone.

so the "A" tag would be archery ? "B" tag would be any legal weapon? I was thinking to hunt during the Rut, which I think would be "A" tag. i'll have to do more research.

Not necessarily.  Each tag usually has seasons for both modern and archery, but favors one over the other.  You need to look at the dates for each tag and each method.

 In a nutshell yes, the A tag is for Archery hunting & the B tag is for rifle hunts! Sure there are some cow & spike hunts that open up later after Sept Archery hunting in Oct & Nov depending on Zone hunted & unsuccessful archery hunters can take advantage of with MZ or rifle. If only interested in archery hunting as most are then consider the A Tag!

prices have gone up in the past few years, along with the wolf population. I've been to Idaho several times and have seen the number of hunters drop big time. I don't blame them for leaving, I hunt with the B tag in the dworshack and it is a tough hunt. Not a lot of elk have been seen in the past few years, I did have success last year and one year in unit 18, but be prepared to work hard for it. The area can be thick and I'm not sure if there is a spot in Idaho that doesn't have wolves. The governor has done the animals justice by not enforcing wolf kills but it's about ten years too late, it's going to take a long time to get the elk numbers back to the glory days. Good luck if you go there.
