HEy, would the eniat unit be good to apply for for late season rifle?  I heard it was to open but has alot of bucks, would you be able to get in range with rifle?

Well, lots of people are able to get within bow range and are successful in the Entiat, so it's definitely possible with a rifle. Long shots are a possibility in any of the late season mule deer hunts. If you're capable of shooting to 300 yards, you shouldn't have a problem.

It would depend on how well you know the area. The reason the bowhunters fair well is because the snow pushes them there.

If you can get a Special Permit for the November hunt you will have not problem taking a mature buck (open for any deer).  The wdfw website has harvest reports but nearly everyone that hunts takes a buck.

The Entiat is a migration hunt so if we have not weather at all into November, hunt the very end of the season but most years the bucks have moved in by November 1st

I disagree... There are a lot of deer in the unit, but most of the bucks are pretty young... if you know how to hunt and are patient and aren't to trigger happy, I'm sure he could do fine, but giving people the impression that you can just show up on opening day of the Late Nov hunt and shoot a big 170" Muley then you're fooling yourself....  They're there, but they're spread out a good ways...

I guess it depends on a person's definition of what "mature" means.

Well at least there is only 3 guys that hunt that unit every season and they don't care about racks. So you won't have much pressure.   :o  And the tags are easy to draw I think only 9 people put in.

There are some huge 3pts in that area. Way more big 3's than 4's. Lots of deer but there are still many out there that have it in their mind that it is still like pre-2004. :bdid:

It seems like the Entiat unit gets talked about a lot these days. While it is a great unit to hunt, the amount of deer that you will see from regular season to the extended late hunts is a dramatic difference. Just like any area, you need to have a good grasp on where the local deer like to stay and which areas you can catch the migrators at. During the general season it can be a tough hunt, especially if the weather is warm. During the late hunt you'll see a lot of deer, but you might have a hard time finding what you're looking for if you are planning on holding out for a trophy. I think it is a fairly easy task to take an 18"-20" buck out of there, but it is a huge misconception if someone thinks that there are a ton of 24"-30" racks running around and you can take your pick. If your able to hold out and look over a lot of deer, you might come up with one of those dream bucks, but from what I've seen in there over the years, a lot of people either choose to shoot a small to decent buck or are a bit trigger happy. I'll be the first to admit that it can sometimes be difficult to judge a buck in the field depending on what angles you are able to see. I know a lot of guys that I have been around will look at a 20" 4x4 and be convinced that it is a 24"+ buck. only to be somewhat surprised by the ground shrinkage after they take it. Just my thoughts.
