It's perfectly acceptable to shoot grouse where they sit,as when they hit the forest,them big trees tent to mess the shot pattern up.
If you are real good with a 22,they work great .If you have a revolver,those bird shot rounds are really pretty good too.I say revolver,cause they don't cycle in an auto loader.
410 is more than adequate for a grouse ,since most shots will be fairly close anyway.
A 20 is great and a 12 can destroy a close in grouse,if you don't take the duck choke out
