Satsop Deer Down!! My 'Luck Deer'
« on: December 12, 2010, 11:37:09 PM »
Ok, So its not my biggest deer by any means, not even my biggest doe, but it's a deer and meat in the freezer!! And I'm just as happy as one could be with it!  :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:

So Yesterday, my buddies and I went decided to hunt the Satsop area.  His dad was heading to the Shelton side wile Will, his wife, and I decided to go over to the Satsop side to hunt an area where we found a lot of deer last year.  We drove in that morning and decided to hunt the first big clear cut in the morning for neither of us could really remember how to get over to the other area.  I parked my truck on the first spur road and we walked all of the roads.  Then I would walk to one of the landings wile Will and his wife would set up below me and I'd walk down the clear cut trying to push deer that we didn't see to them.  After about 2 hours of doing this and it not panning out we decided to head over to the other location and push a chunk of timber.  We drove around trying to find the spot but instead ended up driving in a circle and I was heading out of the wood the way we came in, so I turned around and we drove back to were we started that morning again trying to find this other area.

As we were approaching our starting location I was looking into the clear cut on my left and Will was looking to his right when he happened to look foward and yelled DEER!  I looked over to the other side of the road and said WHERE!!  "IN THE ROAD" "WHERE" "IN FRONT OF YOU!"

Sure enough me being the driver missed the deer standing dead center in the middle of the road in-front of me standing just feet from where I had parked my truck earlier that morning.  I grabbed my rifle, hopped out of the truck and was fumbling with my capper trying to get my rifle capped, finally I got my rifle capped and took aim at the deer about 60-70 yards in front of us, it started moving towards the jack firs when I squeezed my trigger and popped the deer straight in the dome!   :bfg: Deer dropped like a rock :IBCOOL:!!  But of course with all of the smoke I did not see it drop and was wondering how far it took off.  Will capped his rifle as I started to reload mine, he then handed me his rifle and said "GO, I'll reload yours!"  So I grabbed his rifle and ran up the road to find my deer laying in the drainage ditch dead  :IBCOOL:(or so I thought).  Will got my rifle loaded and his wife drove my truck up too me.  I had laid my rifle (or should I say Will's rifle) down on a stump next to me and was dragging the deer out of the ditch which was filled with water.  The deer then decided to kick me in the thigh and stand up on all fours :yike:!!  In one motion I bent over in pain from being kicked and grabbed the rifle lying next me!  The deer had taken about 4 steps and was at 15 feet from me when I took a snap shot (not aiming, just point and shoot) and hit the deer a second time in the head :o!!  This time I waited a few second before grabbing her, more so for I was sill recovering from being kicked :P!  Will came up to me and gave me a high 5 wile laughing.  It was quite funny actually, just glad the she did not kick me three inched to the right, or I really would have been in pain  ;).

I know that many people have taken deer in the road, and I've seen many on the road and from the road, but this had been my first road deer and I call it my "luck deer".  This really had been my first luck deer and I've taken a deer every year since 2002 (the year of my first deer).

Hope you all enjoy the story!  It was a fun hunt overall!!  We saw a total of 5 deer yesterday and two more today.  Will had tagged one earlier in the week and his wife shot at two yesterday...both clean misses.  I got it all cut up tonight and I'm looking forward to steaks tomorrow!! :EAT:

lol, I just realized that you can actually see where it was the first time I shot it in the photo.  The red spot over my left shoulder is where she had first dropped, Where she lays in the photo is where she dropped after my second shot.  Double dome shots :bfg: , one intentional...the second was not so much intended for the head.  But hey, all clean meat, nothing wasted, and no blood shot to clean up in this one  :IBCOOL:

Nice job James. Glad to see you tagged out. I'm gonna be taking my cousin out in the morning to try and get him a deer. He could of shot a couple of different does today, but he really wants his first set of antlers. I guess they where on a buck today but couldn't quite seal the deal. I'm hoping we can make it happen for him. Otherwise I will try talking him into a doe.
It's not the size of the trophy that make's it a trophy.

I held out for a three point or better for the early season when I took a week off work for deer hunting. This was my last weekend of hunting and I'm glad I took he shot yesterday!!  Never even checked for horns  :chuckle:.  A doe is better than eating a tag any day of the week and last longer  :chuckle:.  Not to mention that the meat really is better from a doe over a buck...well, I think so anyways, not as gamey.

Great story. Pretty funny! I guess that's why your supposed to check to see if they are really dead.
I ended up in the Satsop saturday afternoon and I think I kicked up a deer for a road hunter while I was creeping through the reprod.

Although a slight bruise still shows on my leg, do you really want to see me with my pants down  :dunno:?  Honestly I don't, lol.  That was one tough doe for sure.  First time I had any deer get up after a head shot like that, I've heard of it happening to other people...and that day was my payback for laughing at them  :chuckle:.
