listen jack you must be nuts i saw a video once or twice it had a nut job on a stump in a gillie suit holding a spear, bear came in and he stuck it. was just crazy, bear did not go far, was a great video. would not advise this to a sane person.  guy must have smelled pretty sweet though, kinda like a jelly roll or a sweet bun. it was real close think it sniffed his boot. i think it would make a nice change to the regs.

I've read that if you are going to drink at bear camp, that you should drink beer and not liquor.  When the beer breaks down and is sweat out, it has a carbohydrate smell similar to bread.  Bears in the fall supposedly love high carbohydrate foods--they apparently really like the bread used for donuts.  So the beer sweat is kind of a bear attractant.

i have hypothetically seen that video as well, that guy has balls that clank i believe, the bear was at one point 3 feet from his boot and he was on a 3 foot high stump as the bear a 350 pound bear lowered his head he chucked his homemade spear right into his liver. i think it cut the liver in half and it may have went 30 yards and piled it up. i believe his adrenaline was through the roof which probably gave him the strength to penetrate it like it did. hell yeah they should have a spear only season for bear, what a rush and talk about spirit of fair chase

We have wild hogs in WA?

Rumors of ferrel hogs in this state ... yup..

There was a guide years ago in BC that did baited pit spear Bear hunts.  You're in a pit with bait and an exit route, but the Bear comes in a ramped entrance. You get to spear and then retreat.

My balls don't clank.. they go tink tink tink, as I've been told a time or two that I might have been a little nutz for something I did, but I'm not gonna purposefully put myself in a corner with a bruin that smells doughnuts and pastries and gittin jabbed at.

Yup and the (if it happened) bear had a sweet death moan that would have put chills up your spine if you were there, the guy in the tree stand might have left his back up gun at the bottom of the tree!!! oops! And the 1/2 inch thick steel spear was bent like a fish hook after the bear rolled over it.... if it ever did happen???

I'm in. But....I also ride bulls, climb cliffs, and do other stupid things. I think with this one I stipulate that I get to pick my hunting buddy. That way I only have to outrun my buddy, not the pissed off bear.  :chuckle:

Hound hunting I had a lot of circumstances where I would have used a spear to kill one without even thinking about it. I have knocked them over the head with a small log and knew I wasn't going to kill them, only distract them. At least with the spear, I'd be pretty confident in doing some real harm. Killed enough with a 41 and a 3030 at zero yards to feel pretty safe around them...generally.

As far as penetration... hell, a spear with a SHARP head would get easy, serious penetration. The weight behind a spear is sooooooo many times that of an arrow. I know the speed would be many times less, but the inertia and momentum of the spear would be many times more than an arrow..

I'd sure love to see the vids of this guy doing it!

no he just flat forgot it, which turned out to be a good thing because had he shot it with his pistol the guy that speared it might have never known if he killed all by hiself, and hypothetically if you seen that hypothetical video then you seen that the bear didnt go far. the dude that hypothetically did this really wants to put the video on this site but knows the gamies would corn hole him, my personal opinion if a guy wants to risk his life spearing a bear then he shouldnt get in trouble thats the true spirit of fair chase
