Yeah that one is tough, but I dont know what any of the divers make, and the sounds are kinda tough to hear.

100 percent first try 8)

I've been studying waterfowl books since I could read, my number one choice of literature haha.

For scaup and ringers look at the feathers on the back.  The ringers will be solid black or close to and appear very dark when in flight.  Scaup are white feathers with gray "accenting" throughout and appear lighter to white when in flight.  The white on the bills stands out as another feature on the ringers that the scaup doesnt have, although much less apparent in flight.

No visible white on the bills in the pic I saw.  Why bother worrying in the field on these two, taste about the same and if I shot three scaup I'd just quit shooting at them....   :chuckle:

Let's see them post a picture of hen pintails coming straight in and see who could identify that.

Me, and if you can't positively indentify a duck on wing.. you need to do some homework. Thts what puts people in bad spots and over their limits of certain speicies

Oh darn, can't tell the difference between a scaup and a ring-neck in a still photo coming straight at me, what shall I do??

I already said if I had the max number of a limited duck like scaup, I wouldn't shoot another if I could not see it better and tell what it was.  If you think missing one on a still photo test is so awful, how about a game warden in WA that had to ask what kind of duck is that of an eclipse or juvenile drake pintail?

Wells that pretty bad haha. Im fine with someone not shooting when they dont know what it is, but its when people dont know what they are shooting at that bothers me.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that was thrown off by the head on view of the redheads. other than that the rest were not a problem. Ringneck/scaup was OK for me.

still a fun little distraction though ;)

Theres quite a bit of visible white on the bills of the ringers in the pic provided.  Theres none on the scaup pic.  It's quite eays to tell them apart.  will say not shooting anymore after you get 3 is good for someone who can't positively ID the two apart.  They are much tougher on the wing.

Pintails are WAYYY easy.  Long slender birds, blue bills, grey feet, different brown than a mallard.

With the redheads the body shape, head color, and bill color are the giveaways.  Redheads have a rounded head like a mallard, cans slope down to the bill more.
