338 federal? same as 338 win mag?

i think its way easier and cheaper to lose a few pounds and get stronger than to spend way more money on a gun 1-2 lbs lighter... most , most, lightweights i have hefted feel too whippy.. the wind is not blowing its ass off in the store. but up in the hills, it will.

i believe, and i might be wrong, that the kimber 84 is the short action calibers and the 8400 is the long actions. you may find more along the lines of what you want caliber wise if you look at the long action version. aside from that, i think they are the same rifle...somebody correct me if i am wrong, FOS??

The 338 fed. is based on the 308 round. Some of the appeal for me was the short action. The load that I have worked up so far is a little over 2600 fps. The 338 win mag. is a long action. Alot of the reloading data lists 2700 to 2800 fps. for that round. A couple hundred fps is not that big of deal to me but my loads haven't shown any signs of pressure yet so I might bump that up a little bit.

if i wasnt able to use my 338 win mag, or a 8mm rem mag, my next choice would be a 35 whelen..or a 350 rem mag

I'd go with the 308, especially since you dont reload. It'll do anything the others do, and it's a lot cheaper to shoot.

those calibers minus the weatherby mags i can have reloaded from a buddie.

i also want 257 weatherby mag, and 270 weatherby mag. but those i can not get loaded. and i dont want to pay that money. though i will only have to worry about sighting it in, then it would only be shot once or twice a year.

I personaly want a .280 close to 7mm rm in ballistics for deer sized bullets with less kick. I also think a 300 wsm would be rowdy. Short action and lots of poop 30 cal it would be saweet but thats jsut my opinion. I shoot a 30-06 right nwo but its not my favorite not sure why but its not. I like the 7mm rem mag better than the 06 so I think a 280 would be a perfect balance again in my opinion and the wsms are also awesome. 7mm wsm looks intrigueing but bigstick pissed me off so I say its terrible ahha no it looks good might be better in 7mm i dunno.

if that was all that was offered, i would take the 308. the others cant shoot 180-200 grain bullets.,not counting the 338fed.. personally i think the 338 fed is a *censored*. I'm tired of the "lets create a new cartridge" game.... 308 ammo is cheap, you can get it everywhere, and its proven.

well i have owned 270 wsm and 7mm wsm both great rounds. i preffer the 270wsm over the 7mm wsm.

im not a 30-06 fan at all. but i know the caliber is good and my buddie has an awesome load worked up for it. so that is the only reason i even consider it.

308 ive always wanted to own. it will do everything i would ask of it. but yet...i just havent gotten myself to own that caliber YET.

280. just has everything i can want in a round. at least on paper anyway, and the load my buddie has worked up is a bit faster according to him. and he knws his sht

from all my experiences with high country hiking, and how i hunt the low lands. i know i want the lightest rifle possible. ive got a bad back, and bucket of bolts for ankles and knees (thanks to bmx and snowboarding). i never let any of that stop me at all. but it gets annoying really fast when you carry a 8-9lb rifle/scope combo. 

so i will continue to check out different rifles, caliber does not matter to much sence i have a few that i want. i just need to find the rifle that will best fit my needs, and hope it comes in a caliber that i can work with.

The 84M is the short action based on the .308 cartridge. The 8400 line has both the short action based on the WSM calibers and then the Long Actions. I've handle all the versions, and the Long Actions don't feel "right" in my hands. I much prefer the 84M and the 8400 WSM's. YMMV

The 84M is by far the lightest. Average weight is just a bit over 5lbs. The WSM trip the scale a bit over 6lbs and the Long Actions 6 1/2 to a little over 6 3/4. (references the Montana's)

If you don't roll your own, you want/need the lightest weight rifle, and Elk may be on the menu.... the .308 Win makes the most sense to me.

Yet another option for factory light weight rifles is the Remington 700 Titanium. Not the Alaskan Ti, but the original Ti.

The short actions weigh in at 5 1/4, the Long actions at 5 1/2, and the Shamu's at 6 3/8

If you look around, these can be found. The Ti (Bell & Carlson) stock is ok, but the grip is a little chunky to me. McMillan Classic or Mtn Rifle stock in EDGE would be ideal.

I have a Ti in 7mm-08 and .300 Shamu. I much prefer my Kimber Montana.
