BATFE Requests “Emergency” Authority To Track Semi-Automatic Rifle Sales

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has proposed that it be given emergency authority for six months, beginning January 5, to require about 8,500 firearms dealers along the border with Mexico “to alert authorities when they sell within five consecutive business days two or more semiautomatic rifles greater than .22 caliber with detachable magazines.”  A Washington Post story reporting on the BATFE proposal described that definition as being applicable to “so-called assault weapons,” but it would also apply to many rifles that have never been labeled with that term. 

The reporting requirement will apparently be imposed under the “authority” the BATFE has used in the past to demand reporting of other types of transactions from certain limited groups of dealers over the past 10 years, but the new proposal is far broader than any previous use of this authority.  Of course, there's no law today that prevents dealers from reporting suspicious transactions (or attempted transactions) to the BATFE, and dealers often do so. The BATFE is also free to inspect dealers' sales records—either for annual compliance inspections or during a criminal investigation. 


So what say you?  I do not like this proposal at all. Another move to invade the privacy of lawful gun purchasers.
I believe they would be better off seriously investigating home burglaries of weapons than to mess with the guys who are buying weapons thru legal means.

They will first take an inch....then take a mile.

That's a pretty broad scope, a little too broad. There are many hunting rifles that fit that description. I used to have a Browning BAR, that was semi auto with a detachable magazine. Definately not an assault rifle. I think they need to enforce the regulations that are already in place, before adding new ones.

Several things wrong with this....

how many authorized gun dealers are selling weapons to mexican drug cartels and mexican terrorists?
Why do American citizens on American soil need to be regulated because Mexico cannot control its criminals?
How much longer are we gonna accept this border invasion and the terrorist actions by Mexico?

Build a damn wall solve most of the problem

my gun guy told me that anytime I buy more then one  gun at a time, he is to notify batf. I ws told this during the brady period, so not sure if it was part of that.

Unfortunatly we are a society (and Government) that reacts instead of being proactive. It is to much work to go after the Cartels in Mexico. So, we will allow the Government to restrict our Liberty. This of course will do nothing what so ever to stem the flow of violence that they are talking about.

I dont think OUR weapons are the ones to worry about. H*ll, any good attorney would make a legitimate 2nd amendment complaint that it limits OUR access to a means of protection we're entitled to. I fail to see how this effects parties in Mexico, unless this is geared towards addressing Mexican gangs/cartel members already inside the U.S.

Either way, there are probably more effective/less invasive ways to handle this, i.e do a better job policing our borders/change border policies/etc

you guys dont understand. there are cartels that use american citizens to purchase firearms in the states. wwatch boarder wars and you will see how often american citizens get caught trying to smuggle weapons into mexico. think about how much makes it through. last episode i watch there was a white family kids mom and dad. looked like god fearing folks. they were smuggling a crap load of money across the boarder somthing like 600k in cash. when the wars in the boarder towns spill onto american streets i bet you will sing a different tune.

There will be no new tune if the trouble spreads.  We have certain expectations rooted in our founding documents.  Under the Constitution it makes more sense to ban use of the dollar than to infringe on the right to keep and bear arms.

If we could just add a "mexican tag" to our hunting license for a fee of $5 with no hunter orange required during that season, then we wouldnt need a border patrol cause it would be a solid line of hunters with guns pointed south 10 people deep!

I am sure that is why they are doing this.  There is a need to better enforce the guns that are being re-sold south of the border, and by tracking who is buying allot of guns north of the border should assist in this.  Most all of the guns used in the drug wars in Mexico are sold to them by Americans, and the Americans buy the dope that fuels the demand for the war.

It used to be the economic situation that was driving illegals into the US, now because of the actions of US citizens (drugs and arms) there is another reason for illegals to cross the border - safety.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention ICEMAN.  I did use the link attached to write my represenatives in government.  So many people are happy to point their finger at "big government" "dems" or "republicans" as the cause of any given problem.  I liken that to children on a playground pointing a finger at someone and saying "he did it".  Truth of the matter is we have these problems because we allow it and don't do anything to solve these problems.  Take some action people don't just write on this forum and expect nothing to change.

I do not believe that the majority of weapons being used by the cartel were legally bought here in the US. I understood that most all of the automatic weapons were chinese made, and that many of the weapons which were crossing the border were actually stolen from law abiding american citizens.

Not true!!!!
Only about 12% of recovered firearms in Mexico come back to the US.  The remaining 88% cannot be traced because they are coming from other countries ( China, Russia, Guatemala, El Sal, Columbia, Mexican army thefts)

Mexicans are not coming here for safety. They come up for work to earn money and many return home every year. They send a lot of money home in hopes of buying a place down there and to return and live there. Very few, in my experience, want to integrate into American culture. That is why we have English and Spanish in all govt documents, business transactions, most radio stations in E Wa are Spanish etc etc. . A  high percentage living here are involved in or support relatives who are involved in the narcotics trade.

BATF does not have the track record to give them more powers. 

Yet I have to ask how many of us have ever bought more than five rifles or handguns at one time??  I wish I had the free cash to make a purchase like that.  Yeah, I'll take that .270 Tikka, that .30.06 700 ADL, that Weatherby .300 mag., that Glock .45, and that Beretta AL391 12 gauge.  Oh and can you get me the number of a good attorney.  And do you know a good hotel near by.  Because when I bring this lot home I'm out on my ass and probably divorced.
