Blacktail shedding already?
« on: December 18, 2010, 11:05:18 PM »
My son found a good forkedhorn shed the other day.   Definately this years shed, still bloody, and in the middle of the trail down to our 300 yard target at our house.  I think this has to be the earliest I've ever heard of Blacktail shedding around here.  Any others?

Yep, that's why I posted it.  Seems about a month and a half early to me.

I haven't seen the animal, so it may be injured or something.  It's definately a clean and natural shed though.

Got a call from my buddy in Republic on Friday.  He was watching a bull moose as we were talking that still had its antlers.  Usually they have already shed by now.   :dunno:

I have found several through out this year, deer and elk. I am always looking for them. Some as recently as this month. Just because it is early for the new drops, that does not mean there are not ones from last year and before waiting for you.

I have found sheds this early, both forkhorns. I saw a buck this weekend with both dropped, younger buck spike or fork. He had an obvious wound in his shoulder. Hope he makes it.

A buddy of mine killed a spike buck yesterday and when he loaded it in the truck both spikes fell off.

Agreed! Seen a 3 point two years ago on December 15 with one horn. Had a trail cam pic of a buck, as well, but no antlers. That was on Jan. 4th, though.

I stand corrected.  For some reason the bucks around my place seem to hold on to their head gear until late January.   :dunno:
